Friday 11th April: Flash Tattoos, Electro Sparkles & The Return of Summer

There seems to be no end to the colourful moons we’re treated to in the Southern Hemisphere, and this weekend, it’s a pink one. Drag yourself out of bed at 10 am on Sunday to catch the campest of all the moons at peak fullness. Here's what's happening over the weekend in Melbourne.

The Headlines

  • Don’t get too comfortable in those jumpers—we’re about to get the hottest April day since 2004. In fantastic news for our mental health (but not so much for the environment), the autumn hot spell will last until Thursday, with temps set to reach almost 30 degrees (!!) on Saturday. This might be your final chance to tick off some of the summer activities you didn’t get around to.

  • We’ve spoken about the London and Melbourne music parallels many times before—and now one of London’s best-loved festivals is officially making the trip over. GALA Festival, whose usual home is Peckham, is celebrating its tenth birthday with a world tour, and Melbourne’s on the list. No word yet on the exact venue or lineup, but mark December 6 in your calendar and start planning the outfit now.

  • Pistachio Papi continues to steal our hearts, and the latest creation is a New York-style cheesecake now available at Yo-Chi. It’s only around for a month, so if you needed an excuse to swing by for a weekend sweet treat with an extra slice of nutty goodness—this is it. Worth every extra penny when it comes to weigh time.

Where to Eat and Drink

Transport yourself to Europe minus the airfare by spending an evening at Tippy Tay in the CBD. The chic décor screams coastal Italy, and the food matches the vibe—authentic Italian trattoria vibes. Word on the street is that they do a tasty lasagna, and we’re loving the amount of cacio e pepe-inspired dishes on the menu. Wine connoisseurs are also spoiled with 3,000 vintage bottles that line the wall—what a treat.

Where to Live

This apartment is perfect if you want a flavour of the Chapel St chaos without being right in the mix. You’ll get your own bathroom, walk-in wardrobe, outdoor pool and sky lounge (whatever that means). The ideal candidate is a friendly, clean and tidy female—we’re sure there’s one of you out there.

Core selling point: that bedroom rug will make sure you never forget the alphabet again.

Where to Work

Carlsberg are looking for a Brand Ambassador to travel round the city flogging their beers to the hospitality venues of Melbourne. Whilst hopefully we can all collectively agree that Carlsberg is one of the worst beers, the $90,000 salary on offer would sweeten the deal and get you singing its praises. It's a casual role with flexible hours, and as long as you've got the gift of the gab, it'll be a breeze.

Where to Go on Friday

Paradise Alley in Collingwood are hosting a free vinyl night tonight with classic tunes from the ‘70s through to the ‘00s. On from 8 pm to midnight, it's the ideal Friday night out—no need for a super late one. There's a lovely little outside area, plus pool and darts inside to keep you entertained—the perfect mate date night. Optional dress code of "electro sparkles"—we might give that one a miss.

Where to Go on Saturday

The Fashion Thrift Society put on huge vintage fashion markets all over Aus, and this weekend, it's our turn. From 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, the MSAC in Albert Park will become an op shop lover’s dream with over 1,000 racks of clothes to look through. They’re also offering free flash tattoos, manis, henna, tarot reading, a photo booth, and barber cuts—you can get yourself a full makeover for free. There are also stands for permanent jewellery, tooth gems, and piercings, alongside food trucks and DJs to make a day of it.

Where to Go on Sunday

Comedy is still very much in the air this weekend, and one of the standout events sees some of Australia’s best jokers fight it out to win the RAW National Grand Final. The winner not only claims bragging rights but also secures a spot at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where proper British humour lives. Tickets are still up for grabs, so don’t miss your chance to (hopefully) witness the next big names in comedy.
