Friday 11th October: black holes, free tattoos & Oktoberfest
Whether you're spending your weekend running the marathon or running your mouth at bouncers, have a good one. Read on to see what the weekend has to offer you.
The Headlines
Graham Norton is channeling his inner working holiday-er and heading down under for the first time. He’s set to bring his new show to Aus early next year and you can catch him at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on the 16th March. Tickets go on sale at 11am this morning if you fancy getting some home comfort booked in the diary. You’ll even get the chance to ask the main man a question yourself if that’s the final encouragement you need.
If you’ve been partial to a Boardmasters trip in years gone by, let us raise you We Are Lost Festival. The event will take over, you guessed it, St Kilda Beach, on March 1st next year. Guy J takes the headline spot, with Patrice Bäumel, Khen, and Jamie Stevens also set to perform. They’re pushing the intimate nature of the festival so sign up for presale if you’re keen for a beach boogie.
We’ve all noticed prices creeping up, and a barrier is about to be broken with Melbourne's first property being listed for over $100 million. One for the nosy readers, you can see what that hefty price tag can get you in Toorak on the listing. The regal mansion is being sold by the family that owns the department store Myer, and it's just as grand as you would expect.
Where to Go on Friday
The Melbourne Planetarium in Spotswood is opening up on Fridays for after hours, adult only showings (meaning no screaming kids, nothing seedy). Their October programme consists of a short film about black holes and a wacky looking psychedelic film taking you on a journey though a fictional world. It’s worth watching the trailers to see what you're getting yourself in for. Tickets are around $25 each.
Where to Go on Saturday
Oktoberfest season is upon us, and it's taking place in Catani Gardens in St Kilda on Saturday. Featuring rides, live music and even a Berghain-inspired rave cave (as well as your classic steins and bratwurst), it's a day set to be an RSA marshal's worst nightmare. Tickets are on final release, setting you back $80 to enter, so we hope you've been saving up. Get your finest lederhosen ready and prepare yourself for a rowdy afternoon.
Where to Go on Sunday
The Melbourne Marathon is being held on Sunday, and in true Aussie fashion, the race will start at 7am. It will start and finish at the MCG, with the route winding through Albert Park and tracing the coast. With around 40,000 participants across all races, it's set to be a great atmosphere with lots going on. Luckily, no rain forecast, but you really never know.
Where to Go Bonus
Now Spring is in full force, there is just too much going on. As a bonus event over the weekend, Oatly are hosting a pop-up in Brunswick in support of local businesses. Saturday's event is a midday speed dating where participants are encouraged to bring their favourite book to share with dates—no Dutch courage here. Sunday brings a collab with The Black Mark, where you can get a free tattoo from their artists in their distinctive style.
Where to Eat and Drink
Maker & Monger is a stall in Prahran Market serving up some of the best toasties in Melbourne. Specialising in their extensive range of cheeses, from raclette, Parmigiano wheels, and even cheese imported from the UK and France. If you're missing a slice of Europe, they use their fromage expertise in their specially curated toasties and lunch boards. They have a few seats in the heart of the market, and are open every day except Monday & Wednesday.
Where to Live
This full two-bed flat is up for grabs in Northcote and it's a good spot for dogs if you're one of the lucky ones with a furry friend in Melbs. The detail in the post makes us think this Fairy Flosser is a wannabe landlord in disguise, and we're obsessed with the annotation on these house photos, there's absolutely no chance of you getting the kitchen and the front yard confused.
Core selling point: built-in desk overlooking the lemon tree—how poetic.
Where to Work
This company are hiring for film and television extras, with opportunities on offer to feature in TV commercials, feature films, series and more. They are taking on people with no experience at all, and are looking for all shapes and sizes. Offering casual work and pay from $25 to a quite frankly unbelievable $1500 per hour, if you think you've got what it takes, then head over to one of their information sessions.
