Friday 13th December: Burrata S'mores, Grand Prix Hack & More Markets

Happy Friday the 13th to all who celebrate. Rumour has it that if you send The Melbourne 417 sign-up link to a friend, all your bad luck will be wiped. We’ll leave you with that whilst we help you plan your weekend.

The Headlines

  • With every single company hopping on the trend of wrapping up the year, Broadsheet has provided us with an actual useful one—the 16 best things their team ate in Melbourne this year, and that's a team we know we can trust. There are some particularly wacky picks on there, so if you're looking to try something a bit out of the box, take a look through the list. Next time you wonder where the best white pozole or sarciado is in Melbourne, you know where to look.

  • If Wicked has turned you into a musical fan, we might your next must-watch. Hit show "Dear Evan Hansen" opens at The Playhouse tonight and will run until mid-Feb. The moving story follows a socially anxious Evan, who finds himself suddenly thrust into the spotlight, we'll leave you with that and no more spoilers. The Melbourne shows will be its Aussie premiere and tickets start at $65. A good Christmas present idea if you're struggling for a theatre-loving friend.

  • Not to talk about the weather again, but it really is feeling like summer now. In the name of UV, we wanted to share this list of the very best boozy courtyards (just say beer gardens) across the city. Whether it’s a couple after work tonight or you’re looking for somewhere to settle in for the whole afternoon tomorrow, it’s got you covered. There’s even a fun interactive map for the next time you find yourself aimlessly wandering, absolutely gasping for a pint.

Where to Go on Friday

Another day, another market. The suburb in question today is Northside's Coburg. This one is more artsy than Christmas, with Bridges Reserve set to be filled with sustainable fashion, art prints and jewellery all weekend. There's plenty of live music too, with a good mix of indie, soul and Afro-disco. The action will continue all the way through to Sunday so if you find yourself at a loose end, you know where to head.

Where to Go on Saturday

This is one for the budding painters amongst us—life drawing classes are taking place every weekend in December at Glowing Structures Gallery on Chapel Street. The session is led by a seasoned artist who's ready to teach you all the tricks of the trade. It's $30 a ticket, which includes all the materials you'll need to create your masterpiece. Spaces are limited and bookable over Instagram.

Where to Go on Sunday

UGO Burrata Bar turns one on Sunday, and to celebrate, it's giving away free burrata s'mores to the first 100 customers through the doors. It's situated in South Melbourne Market, which is arguably one of the best places to spend a Sunday morning in the city, so you can have a lovely wander after your free sweet treat. If you don't make it there in time, there's still plenty more goodness you can devour—a big ball of cheese works on just about everything, apparently.

Where to Eat and Drink

Melbourne boasts plenty of bars with stunning views, but Fable Rooftop raises its hand as one of the standouts. Perched 14 stories above Lonsdale Street in the CBD, Fable offers breathtaking, unobstructed views of our gorgeous city skyline. Its chic contemporary décor perfectly complements the sophisticated Mediterranean-inspired menu. If you find yourself with a free midweek afternoon, its 'Golden Hour' deal between 3 pm and 5 pm from Tuesday to Friday means you can enjoy a cocktail for $15 or a glass of wine for just a tenner.

Where to Live

Car parking spaces can be hard to come by these days, but this spot in Brunswick has an all-day, free spot—what a treat. Judging by the single FB post we're privy to, it looks like the current housemates are pretty close and looking to welcome in another friend, not just someone for the occasional awkward kitchen small talk. The house itself is cute, with yet another garden screaming out for a BBQ or five.

Core selling point: definitely not the bottle collection point.

Where to Work

Missed tickets to the Melbourne Grand Prix? There's still one way you can get in, working it. Although no guarantees that you'd see any action. If you love F1 and can carry three plates, then you meet the criteria, and if you don't have the latter, it's nothing a YouTube video can't fix. Alongside the obvious benefit, there's no better way to pocket a decent bit of cash alongside your normal job.
