Friday 14th March: F1 Fever, Sunday Strolls & Another Red Moon

It's another huge weekend in the phenomenon that is Melbourne's sporting calendar. F1 fever is well and truly underway already, but the main event takes place this Sunday. If you didn't fancy dropping a few hundred dollars on a ticket, here's a list of all the places you can watch around the city for free. Thank you, once again, to the beautiful bars of Melbourne. If you couldn't care less about cars zipping about, there is, of course, plenty of other stuff going on too. Let's get into it.

The Headlines

  • The devil works hard but Alex Warren works harder. His song Ordinary is the latest one to take over TikTok, meaning we know only a few lines of the chorus and nothing else. Going viral has led to him announcing a bunch of upgraded Aussie shows, moving him from The Forum into Margaret Court Arena. Tickets go on sale this morning, so if you want to hear those two lines you know live in the flesh, set your alarm for 10 am.

  • Melbourne's skies will be graced with another fun moon tonight. It's set to be tinged red and is expected to occur around 7:40pm. The experts recommend hitting a view point above the city, so if you fancy swapping the pub for some stargazing, here's a list of some of the best places to catch a glimpse.

  • We might be in autumn but the sun this week has been out in full force, so remember to lather the sun cream on if you are headed to the F1 this weekend. Thanks to La Roche Posay, you can actually take it one step further. They're offering free skin checks to race attendees, so you can have an expert look at any spots or moles you might be suspicious of. It won't take much time out of the excitement of your day but could add years to your life. Worth stopping by for some suncream freebies if nothing else.

Where to Eat and Drink

The search for Melbourne’s best brew continues, and today’s pick is a certified staple—7SeedsCoffee. Around since 2007, it helped shape the city’s specialty coffee scene with ethically sourced beans roasted in-house. The Carlton café has a laid-back feel, and if you don’t want to queue for a table, you can grab their beans to brew at home. You’ve probably already had a Seven Seeds coffee without realising—plenty of Melbourne cafés use them, and for good reason.

Where to Live

We've got a short-term sublet up for grabs today in a spacious Brunswick home. Available from April 14th-May 24th, the sun-drenched master bedroom comes with the perfect amount of houseplants, Gossip Girl loving housemates and all the fresh basil your heart desires. There are several guitars floating about, so maybe you can even pick up a new hobby during your stay.

Core selling point: adorable sunroom to enjoy a morning coffee in.

Where to Work

Your next chance to bag some free AFL tickets is by applying for this job as a receptionist at Essendon Football Club. The successful candidate gets a cheap gym membership thrown in too, so you can train like the players. It’s a casual role for up to 18 hours a week meaning you've still got plenty of time to enjoy yourself. Microsoft Word and Excel knowledge is essential, but if you didn't listen in GCSE ICT, we're sure it's nothing ChatGPT can't help you with.

Where to Go on Friday

We've got a fun Friday pick for you to let your hair down after a long four-day week. Yah Yahs in Fitzroy is hosting a club night to celebrate the release of Chappell Roan's latest single. Expect drag acts, plenty of Shania Twain, and loads of cowboy hats flying around. There are still some free tickets left, so get yourself one here and don your finest pink outfits as you enter the Pink Pony Club.

Where to Go on Saturday

Final bit of F1 chat, we promise. The Fan Festival is the place to be on Saturday for entertainment way beyond the track. Expect live driver interviews, some celeb appearances, and plenty of live music to keep you busy between sessions. You can check out an iconic F1 show car, test your reactions in the Blast Lane, or grab a Virtual Driver Selfie—perfect for the Hinge profile. All the on-track action from F1, F2, F3, and Supercars will be streamed on the big screens too so you don't miss any of the action.

Where to Go on Sunday

Hype Girl Social's weekly Sunday morning walk is a chance for you to get your steps in and make some new friends at the same time. The "slay strolls" group meet at Kremma cafe in Elwood at 8:30 am sharp to grab a coffee before heading off on a 5.5km loop which usually takes about an hour. We're promised loads of people go alone, so be brave, and we're sure you'll have a lovely time.
