Friday 17th January: Boiler Room, Film Festival & A Rare Comet

Keep your eyes peeled on the horizon tonight and over the weekend for your chance to see one of the brightest comets, visible for the first time in 160,000 years—god knows who remembers that. Read more on the details of how and where to spot this rare sight after you’ve read more on how and where to spend your weekend.

The Headlines

  • Watching balls be hit back and forth at the tennis all day is thirsty work, so here are the best bars near the AO for you to grab a drink and keep the day going. With many bars nearby offering special deals for tennis-goers, it would be rude not to enjoy a pint on a rooftop to watch the sunset. If the street food offerings at the tennis aren't tickling your fancy, these spots also do some tasty food to soak up the litres of Aperol Spritz in your system.

  • Wine bars absolutely thrive here in Melbourne, with plenty of gorgeous spots dotted across the city. Gracie's Wine Room is about to become Toorak Road's newest place to be with its opening set for Sunday. The new owner has been documenting the renovations over on TikTok and some stressful times aside, we're quite jealous we're not doing it ourselves. If we did happen to be launching an adorable vino bar and courtyard, we'd probably choose the middle of Jan to do it too—delightful.

  • It seems it's a new opening kind of weekend and next up we've got somewhere for your morning coffee after one too many glasses at Gracie's. Goose Coffee, is opening up on Pakington Street in St Kilda this weekend and to celebrate the launch, they're offering $2 coffees right through to the end of Feb. Some beloved Sebby’s Scrolls will also be available to buy whilst stocks last. They must be expecting the crowds—and we'll definitely be front of the queue.

Where to Eat and Drink

Friday night stinks of falling into a pub on a wander down Chapel Street, and if you can't stand the thought of a dry Jan during peak summer, Temperance Hotel has you covered. With a late night happy hour starting at 11 pm, weekend night outs no longer need to break the bank. The drinks in question are sadly $11 vodka redbull but maybe it'll taste better than in a sticky floored club back home? Everything's better in the sun. They also have one of the usual $9 wine and beer 5 pm - 7 pm if that's more your vibe.

Where to Live

If you're settled in a summer sublet but need a new place in a couple of months time, this flat in St Kilda East can help you get sorted early. The vibe of the bedroom is a drastic contrast from the rest of the flat but nothing a few prints and some nicer bedding can't fix. There's also a serious BBQ waiting to be used out on the balcony if you're partial to some autumn Aussie cooking.

Core selling point: AI looking fake fireplace.

Where to Work

Today's pick is another one highly motivated by employee discounts, the Levi's stores in Myer and David Jones are looking for casual sales stylists in the CBD. If you've got some retail experience and have the eye for styling, this role could be the one for you. They are also after people who are around for immediate start, so no waiting around for contracts, your unemployment could end straight away.

Where to Go on Friday

The influx of outdoor cinemas seemingly isn't exclusive to the city centre itself; there's a fllm festival going on down The Peninsula this weekend and it looks very wholesome indeed. Tonight features an independent Aussie film with tomorrow's schedule involving a short film competition. Take a picnic and your beach chair and settle in for a night of Aussie culture (if you can call it that) under the stars. Tickets start at $10—can't complain at that.

Where to Go on Saturday

If plans are looking sparse this weekend and you're up for a heavy one, Sugar Mountain x Boiler Room is putting on a big weekend of big names at the Seaworks Maritime Precinct just outside of the city. This very cool venue on a port will be hosting Peach, Sherelle, Chaos in the CBD and many other DJs over the two day festival. Tickets for one day are $119, or a tempting offer of $199 for the two-day pass.

Where to Go on Sunday

Camberwell Sunday Market is well known to be the best around for picking up bargain vintage clothes. For those that know their way round an op-shop and can spot a gem among the random array of second hand clothes, you'll be absolutely at home here. There are also plenty of stalls for records, antique jewellery and other market classics, and of course all at market prices. It's the older, cooler and more understated cousin of the infamous Fitzroy Market.

Match Point Pick

It seems Jack Draper is living rent-free in our heads right now, but British bias aside, he genuinely is the one to watch today. Both of his previous matches have been absolute cinema, each going the full five sets for the win. Today, he faces another Aussie, Aleksandar Vukic, and if Wednesday's home crowd is anything to go by, they won't be on Jack's side. On paper, it's his to lose, but Grand Slam tennis is a wild ride.
