Friday 18th October: Eurovision on tour, free jazz & a Tuscan turret

Never have I ever seen a Melbourne 417 weekend edition with no mention of a market. Don't fix what's not broken. Here is how to spend your weekend in the city, and just the one market rec for you today.

The Headlines

  • If you're a Carlton market frequenter who's partial to a Masses Bagel from time to time, you'll soon be able to get your fix more than once a week. After finding their feet at the regular Saturday pop-up, the team behind the dough has secured a permanent space in Collingwood from December. The hot smoked trout, curly cucumber pickle & preserved kumquat on a fermented potato bagel (easy for you to say) is about to level up.

  • Eurovision has announced a tour of Australia, featuring artists from all over Europe (and Australia) in the performance, even featuring an ABBA-heavy fan zone. Ever since their controversial entry to the competition back in 2015, Australia has done a decent job, placing in the top 10 five times (much better than can be said for the UK's entries). No need to wait until May for your Eurovision fix—they'll be hitting the Palais Theatre on November 15th.

  • Melbourne is well known for its thriving gay scene, and there are plenty of options when it comes to a big night out (despite its surprising lack of a distinct gay district?). Beat has done the research so you don't have to, collating the best gay bars and clubs in the city. Highlights include a clothing-optional bar on Smith Street and the absolutely iconic Poof Doof. The list is worth a read if you're after a good time.

Where to Go on Friday

If you want to swap the inside walls of a Richmond pub for some live jazz music, take yourself to Fed Square and pray for some sun. The festival runs all weekend, but Friday takes the evening slot with Afro-Cuban powerhouse La Influencia kicking off proceedings, and trumpet-playing vocalist Harry James Angus rounding off the night.

Where to Go on Saturday

Popular Lebanese chicken joint El Jannah is offering $5 meals all day on Saturday at their new opening in Kensington. For less than the price of a train fare, you can get a 1/4 chicken, chips, a drink, and their special garlic sauce that will make you want to brush your teeth constantly all weekend. Available from 11am-11pm in-store at their new location.

Where to Go on Sunday

Queen Vic Market are hosting their annual Indian festival this Sunday to Celebrate Diwali from 10am-4pm. With an array of Indian classics on offer, from top-notch biriyani to your favourite curry, you can munch on some hangover-curing Indian food whilst admiring the Bollywood dancers and getting some henna done. Check the schedule for what's on hour-by-hour.

Where to Eat and Drink

The only thing better than a roast dinner to settle the Sunday scaries has to be unlimited paella with a hair-of-the-dog sangria to wash it all down. That's what you'll get for $30 between 12 and 3 at Mr L's in South Yarra every Sunday. Bookings are available in the Atrium, where great vibes, authentic food, and a good old family recipe are promised.

Where to Live

No, this is not a turret in the rolling hills of Tuscany; it is, in fact, a room to rent in our very own St Kilda. With gorgeous views of the Esplanade and a sunset lookout you could sell tickets for, this is the perfect room for summer, and we think you'll be fighting each other for it. No partying in the house—just the occasional wine or beer—but you're dangerously close to The Espy anyway so can head there once the sun's gone down.

Core selling point: it would be a bit weird if we didn't say the view wouldn't it.
