Friday 1st November: food truck heaven, Britpop bangers & a Broadway smash-hit

PSA to the alarming amount of teachers that seem to have made the trip down under for the big pay rise Australia offers, the country is in desperate need of maths teachers. If you know your times tables and your Pythagoras theorem, permanent residency is just a job application away. Here is what to expect from this sunny-ish weekend in Melbourne.

The Headlines

  • Name a better Saturday activity than eating and drinking your way around the city…crickets. To make sure you're hitting all the best spots on offer, check out this comprehensive guide on the 49 (fascinated to know why they didn't round up 50) very best food and drink joints in Melbourne. Quite a few of the spots have featured in the 417 so take a trip down the archive for our take on some of them.

  • Pinch, punch first of the month, November is here and according to this list from Beat, there's festivals on each weekend to keep us all entertained. Get your group chat in check, align your calendars and book in for a couple of them. From film to African culture, there really is something for everyone in there.

  • Just when we thought we couldn’t love Queen Vic Market any more, a brand-new Food Truck precinct has opened up, serving even more food and drink goodness. Open Tuesdays, and Thursday through Sunday, the nine new stands will transport your tastebuds to Germany, Ethiopia, and Japan, with a quick stop in Mexico. Naturally there's an organic coffee shop too—soo Melbourne.

Where to Go on Friday

With many being devastated about missing the coveted return of Oasis in their hometown next year, we have the next best thing. There's an Oasis reunion inspired Britpop night on at the Espy tonight, with DJs also playing artists like the Arctic Monkeys and the Stone Roses. Make sure to don a bucket hat and wear your finest parka jacket to fit right in.

Where to Go on Saturday

The event that everyone has been talking about, the Melbourne cup finally starts this Saturday—who knew the Aussies are so into their horse racing? General admission tickets are $88 for a fun day out, and Saturday's Penfold Victoria Derby Day has a black and white theme—there is still time for a last minute trip to DFO to bag an outfit. Always remember, chances are you're about to lose, IYKYK.

Where to Go on Sunday

Sunday is the launch day of the famous Sister Act at the Regent Theatre in the CBD. The Broadway smash-hit is gracing the stage until the end of Jan, so plenty of time to get your feel-good fix if you can’t make the debut. With some sing-along classics and a guaranteed wholesome time, it's not quite the real Broadway but it'll still be a good time.

Where to Eat and Drink

Tucked away just off Sydney Road, don't be fooled by Welcome to Brunswick's modest entrance, it's a 450 seater beer garden with food trucks, a huge selection of 4 Pines beers and communal seating. It gets busy at the weekend when it stays open until midnight, with a bit of an atmosphere guaranteed. There are also $20 jugs on offer most of the weekend—unheard of in this economy.

Where to Live

If you're looking for somewhere to get some pre Aus Open practise in, this South Yarra flat comes complete with a tennis court. There's a fancy pool and sunbathing deck, along with a secret entrance to Big W we're told.

Core selling point: your new housemate writes this newsletter.

Where to Work

Flight Club is landing in Melbourne and needs a whole new team to get it off the ground. Backing yourself for a bullseye every time and having the ability to greet hen and stag parties with a smile on your face are equally as relevant here we'd say. The pay is pretty good too, starting at $32 an hour. Quiz question of the day: how many darts have been thrown in Flight Club since it first opened? Answers on Monday.
