Friday 25th October: $5 pasta, furry fashion shows & St Tropez in Melbourne
Happy World Pasta Day to those who celebrate! As expected, there is a plethora of pasta deals around the city today, so you can start your weekend in a carb coma. Aside from pasta, here is what Melbourne has to offer this weekend.
The Headlines
Melbourne Fashion Week is in full swing so here's a roundup of all the best street style looks so far. Enjoy a Friday scroll through the photos over an oat flattie and get some inspiration for your weekend op shop trip. We've reached the final few days of shows, so it's your last chance to try and bag a front-row seat this weekend—good luck.
We're all well aware of Melbourne's coffee rep and the overwhelming choice of independent cafés. But, in a turn of events, Aldi just snapped up the prize for the best coffee beans in Australia. Aldi's Lazzio coffee range is actually roasted right here in Melbourne by the local team at Black Bag Roasters and bagged 14 other awards on the night. They really do have us in the palm of their hand, don't they?
The awards just keep on coming. The next winner? Caretaker's Cottage. The humble CBD joint was once the home of a church caretaker and has now been named the best bar in Australia and 21st globally. We're told it offers some of the tastiest Guinness in Melbourne, so if you're missing a good old pint of the black stuff, it's one to add to the list.
Where to Go on Friday
Of all the pasta offers today, Etto Pasta Bar has to be our pick. With four venues across the city, they are offering $5 pasta in celebration of World Pasta Day at all their venues, with all the classics on offer. Be prepared to queue as this is a popular spot with a popular offer. This is the final day of their three-day discount and it has already drawn the crowds.
Where to Go on Saturday
This weekend sees Melbourne Cat and Dog Lovers festivals barking and meowing their way into the city (separate events running parallel, both at Melbourne Showgrounds). This does look like a wacky way to spend your weekend, but for $45 there is endless entertainment with showcases, competitions and pet fashion shows. There is even an adoption zone, so beware that you may end up going home with a furry friend.
Where to Go on Sunday
Captain Baxter's in St Kilda is hosting a collab with Chateau Minuty for the ultimate Sunday funday. The St Tropez winemakers are bringing Mediterranean vibes to St Kilda, who can really tell the difference anyway? Offering $13 Froses and $10 spirit & mixers from 3pm-4pm, along with a DJ. Dress code is French Riviera Chic—interpret that at your own risk.
Where to Eat and Drink
We’ll never say no to being greeted by a mimosa. Over the weekend, $69 gets you bottomless brunch at Hotel Jesus in Collingwood. We’re talking house-made guac, salsa, beans, chips (crisps), corn ribs, ceviche tostadas, and some tacos. And to drink, get silly with some sangria and frozen margs.
Where to Live
A huge room with a private balcony fit for a king or queen is up for grabs in Abbotsford. The kitchen area looks like the inside of a ski chalet (or a campsite kitchen, depending on how you look at it) with plenty of space for cooking up a feast. The room's unfurnished and it's famously (excessive use of the word huge in the ad) quite a big space to fill, but nothing a few hours scrolling Marketplace can't fix.
Core selling point: so many different outdoor seating options.
Where to Work
If you're the flatmate who knows how to keep a house plant alive for longer than a week, this vacancy could be your calling. Melbourne Indoor Plants needs a new green-fingered horticulture fan to join the team, working on everything from "seed to sale" and ultimately help the business grow (pun intended).
