Friday 31st January: Pride March, Egg Shortage & Accidental Shrooms

You have probably noticed that Australia has been in the thick of an egg shortage for six long months now, caused by a bird flu outbreak. The bad news is that we will have to wait probably another six months for guaranteed eggs on the shelves—but at least the end is in sight. Read on for the latest this weekend whilst you eat your scrambled tofu in lieu of eggs.

The Headlines

  • Aldi can do no wrong in our eyes, and this time, they’ve really outdone themselves. They’re rolling a retro ice-cream van down to Brighton Beach, serving up frozen treats from just 36 cents—with nothing costing more than a dollar. It's all just a big marketing ploy to make us want to buy ice cream from their shops for the rest of summer, but whether you fall for it or not, it's a nice beach treat nonetheless.

  • If you find yourself getting stressed as you place your Yo-Chi on the scales, listen up. Blitz Bar is Yo-Chi's slightly healthier older cousin, and they're treating us to a NO-WEIGH DAY today. The small print actually reveals it's $10 bowls from 3pm-5pm, but we get that doesn't quite have the same ring to it. The staff were getting a bit silly with the portions in this promo video, so it really does seem there's no limit—load up and enjoy.

  • While we do miss Boots and Superdrug, we are spoiled out here with the likes of Mecca and Sephora for all our beauty needs. Well, allow us to introduce a new place to spend your hard earned dollars. Adore Beauty has been an online shopping haven for years, but it’s finally opening its first Aussie shop—and of course, it's here in Melbourne. One of its quirks is that it gives away a free Tim Tam with every purchase, and you'll be glad to know that's set to continue in-store. It opens tomorrow at Westfield Southland if you're up for bracing the Saturday shopping crowds.

Where to Eat and Drink

Congrats on making it to the final weekend of this never-ending month (although that's not as much as an issue when it's the heigh of summer). If you're yet to make any plans, we highly suggest heading to The National Hotel in Richmond between 4pm and 7pm for their 'Beer n Bao' happy hour. Every Friday, you can sip on $10 pints, $7 wines, and $12 spritzes while enjoying $4 steamed bao buns (a steal considering they’re usually $15 for two). And it's more than just a cheap eat—the venue has a cool industrial vibe, and a huge outdoor beer garden make it the perfect spot for a chilled Friday night catch-up with the gang.

Where to Live

These two couples are looking for a new housemate in their mid-century Carlton home to be their live-in fifth wheel. The house is beautifully decorated and looks like a very cosy place to live, and they seem like a social bunch who can provide you with some ready-made new mates. They're after someone in their mid-twenties who can slot right in to their very put together looking life.

Core selling point: Living with this gorgeous plant collection.

Where to Work

Costco—the magic warehouse where impulse control goes to die—is looking for new staff to keep those oversized shelves stocked. If you’ve ever dreamed of working somewhere that sells both diamond rings and bulk toilet paper, this might just be your calling. Perks include a fast-paced environment, endless samples (if you time your break right), and the satisfaction of knowing you helped someone leave with way more than they planned.

Where to Go on Friday

Prahran Market is launching a new event series starting this Friday, and it involves cheap pizza and cocktails. Head down to the yard in the market from 4pm - 8pm for $10 pizzas and $10 Aperol Spritz. The event also features a live artwork session from a local artist, along with live music and entertainment. Where else can you be full and tipsy for $20 this weekend?

Where to Go on Saturday

Calling all film and science lovers—this weekend sees the annual Dome Under Film Festival return to Melbourne, where the Scienceworks museum's 16-metre dome planetarium transforms into a cinema. With one visitor saying, "I briefly wondered whether I had accidentally consumed shrooms", this sensory experience gives the same excitement as going to watch your first 3D film as a child. They have a full schedule over the weekend, including science and space films that were made to be on this kind of screen.

Where to Go on Sunday

The Midsumma festival is well underway, and the main event takes place this Sunday. The annual Pride march happens down Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, and with 7,400 marchers and 45k attendees, there's quite the atmosphere. As per tradition, the leather-clad Dykes on Bikes start the procession, which is an iconic spectacle. After the procession, Catani Gardens hosts a party with DJs, street food, and very fun vibes.
