Friday 4th April: Thrifting, Dumplings & Super Shots
Daylight saving ends this weekend, which means shorter evenings, longer lie-ins, and an awkward few weeks of getting the time difference with back home wrong. Our home screen widget hates to see us coming. Clocks go back an hour on Sunday, so enjoy the bonus sleep and prepare for those early sunsets. Here's what's going on across the city this weekend while the dark evenings loom.
The Headlines
EatClub is the gift that keeps on giving. As well as a cheap dinner, you can now add two free Aperol Spritz during aperitivo hour to the mix. Just book through the app at a participating venue, grab a snack to share and enjoy cashback on your drinks. The deal is running until 27th May, so there's plenty of time to squeeze in a spritz or two before summer is officially a distant memory.
The Dinner Ladies are the dynamic duo on a mission to make cooking easier when life gets busy. Tonight, they're popping up at Queensbridge Square from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, handing out free frozen lasagne straight from The Dinnermobile. Head down to get the freezer stocked for the next time a trip down to Coles feels like just too much effort.
A fun new thrift store just opened up in Brunswick (obviously), and it's a great stop to add to your weekend coffee and mooch route. Right at home on Sydney Road among the op shops and second-hand boutiques, Thrifter works by renting rails out to sellers looking to get rid of some vintage gems. You take 100% of the profit, so it could be time to turn those piles of clothes gathering dust into travel funds.
Where to Eat and Drink
Hawker Hall is an underrated gem in Windsor—an Asian beer hall and restaurant inspired by the hawker markets of Singapore. It's somehow created a vibe where you can dress up or dress down, and it’s just as atmospheric on midweek lunch as a Friday night. The menu features all the Asian-inspired faves you could think of, and they offer a selection of a whopping 18 tap beers to sip on whilst enjoying your dumplings.
Where to Live
There are three rooms going in this girls only sociable house in North Melbourne, and one of the rooms is only $585 per month—basically loose change. The house is no stranger to house parties and yard gatherings, so ideal if you're looking to meet some new mates. The rooms are available from varying dates in April to May, and it's in a perfect location, sitting between the CBD and the northern suburbs.
Core selling point: You can move in with two of your mates and make new ones—obvs.
Where to Work
An easy way to top up that bank balance as quickly as possible is to work as a planter, and a company called Dirty is hiring. Sounds like you'll be flung into a random mix of like-minded people who just want to be out and about whilst making money, planting plants in and around Melbourne. There's even a performance bonus on offer every day for those that plant the most—nothing like a bit of healthy competition at work.
Where to Go on Friday
Prahran Market are really providing with the events at the moment, and their latest marketing genius idea is an event tonight called Fleetwood Mac & Cheese. They'll be screening an iconic 1997 Fleetwood Mac concert on the big screen in the yard, with local vendors serving up mac and cheese. The concert will be playing from 5 pm to 8 pm, and entry is free—just reserve your ticket beforehand here.
Where to Go on Saturday
The Aussie netball league kicks off this weekend, with the Melbourne Mavericks taking on the Sunshine Coast Lightning at John Cain Arena. None other than Tracey Neville (yes, Gary and Phil's sister) is the head coach of the Melbourne team, bringing some classic Northern English grit to the squad. You can't beat live sport on a Saturday, and with tickets from just $25, it's a budget-friendly excuse to get a bit rowdy.
Where to Go on Sunday
You know by now how we feel about a market, and Makers and Shakers is a crafty, artisan extravaganza of a market featuring the very best food, fashion, and gifts on this weekend. Head down if you’ve got a present to buy for someone—or just fancy a little browse. This market is taking over the Carlton Exhibition Centre all weekend, and everything for sale from all 175 vendors is Australian-made.
