Friday 4th October: Nonna's pasta, jumble sale & a backyard beer garden

Don't forget, the clocks go back on Sunday as we finally enter daylight saving time. An extra hour of sun every day until April, but one less hour in bed this Sunday morning—pros and cons. Here is how to spend this wet weekend in Melbs.

The Headlines

Where to Eat and Drink

You've probably heard of the viral steak and chips spots in Paris and London—no menus, endless plate refills, and lines around the block. Well, Melbourne now has its own take on the trend. Local favourite Hotel Railway in Brunswick has introduced a $39 steak & chips 'doubled down' inspired by the streets of Paree. For just 4 hours on a Saturday (how exclusive), you can indulge with a free portion of seconds thrown in.

Where to Live

Stuck in a hostel and looking to escape ASAP? You're in luck. There's a room available with one Irish lad in St Kilda, and you can move in straight away. It's just a one-month sublet too so when you realise you're more into op shopping than nights at The Espy, you can move on to your next spot.

Core selling point: your very own pub garden.

Where to Work

It won't be long before the videos of people floating down the Yarra on picnic boats flood our TikTok feeds, and since that's a sure sign of summer, we can't wait. GoBoat is gearing up for the season and looking for casual staff to help things run smoothly. It's not quite a skipper in the Whitsundays, but a free sunset ride or two will surely hit the spot.

Where to Go on Friday

Designer brand Lee Matthews are hosting a jumble sale on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy this weekend, featuring some cool womenswear, accessories and homeware. You might have seen their gorgeous Armidale Store and been wowed by both the clothes and the price, but we’re hoping the jumble sale means copping a few new pieces at a slashed price. Fingers crossed there are at least a few bargain candles thrown in for good measure.

Where to Go on Saturday

Mode Festival is taking over the Melbourne Pavilion this Saturday, bringing classic day festival vibes to an indoor venue—ideal for escaping the downpours while dancing to your favourite DJs. The lineup features plenty of British talent, so it’s sure to draw in the working holiday crowd in the masses. Tickets are on final release at a hefty $145, but it’s shaping up to be worth it.

Where to Go on Sunday

If you fancy a Sunday mooch, head to The Melbourne Italian Festa for, you guessed it, wine, pizza and panettone. This year's event promises to be bigger than ever, with 140 businesses ready to serve up authentic Italian delicacies. It’s one to check out whether you're after a big bowl of Nonna's pasta to soak up the hangover or fancy rounding off the weekend with some wine tasting.

Where to Get Free Ice Cream

Back again with the freebies, here are the Billy van Creamery free ice cream locations for the weekend:

  • Friday: Queensbridge Square, Southbank. 11am-2pm.

  • Saturday: Abbotsford Covent. 11am-2pm.

  • Sunday: Royal Botanic Gardens, Gate D. 11am-2pm.
