Friday 6th September: Sleeping lions, Vietnamese dance & a free Aperol

On the first weekend of spring where the UV index reaches the dizzy heights of 5, here’s what’s going on in Melbourne over the next few days.

The Headlines

  • Melbourne is the chosen one for the launch of Too Good To Go in Australia. The food waste-saving marketplace sees your favourite cafes and restaurants sell magic bags for a fraction of the usual price. So, if funds are running low, a bargain bag of slightly stale pastries should sort you out for dinner.

  • One for those with a car, Australia’s first Pickleball bar has arrived in Melbourne but unfortunately it’s 50 km out of the city. Still looks worth the trek if you’re a racket sport lover.

  • And a little Friday treat, a free drink on Aperol. Download the MYY App and get $21 cashback for your first bev.

Where to Eat and Drink

We’ll never say no to being greeted by a mimosa. Over the weekend, $69 gets you bottomless brunch at Hotel Jesus in Collingwood. We’re talking house-made guac, salsa, beans, chips (crisps), corn ribs, ceviche tostadas and some tacos. And to drink, get silly with some sangria and frozen margs.

Where to Live

Some prime Fitzroy real estate on offer today, a self-proclaimed ‘massive’ room in a share house with Brits and a Kiwi as roomies. Who needs an en-suite when your bedroom is ‘directly attached to the kitchen’? For the bargain price of $827 per month, this en-kitchen can be yours.

Core selling point: Housemate from Sheffield.

Where to Work

Seasonal customer advisors needed for the zoos around the city. Get ready to explain to a Karen why the lion was sleeping when her kids were running about, or why it’s not your fault that the pregnant elephant hasn’t given birth yet. November to Feb so a perfect little summer job.

Where to Go (Weekend special)

Friday

Head down to Section 8 (our favourite CBD bar) for a Friday night boogie. Get down as early as possible to avoid the torturous queue and make sure you’re one of the smug ones on the inside. PS for all the Bali lovers out there, they serve Bintang if you’re after your fix.

Saturday

Another day, another market rec. Melbourne’s South East Asia Festival is taking over Queen Victoria Market all weekend. There’s a jam-packed schedule full of dancing, food, live music and DJs and sounds like the perfect way to spend a Saturday evening.

Sunday

Looking to mix up your wardrobe and sick of Ghanda and Cotton On? Take yourself for a wholesome Sunday at Round She Goes market, hosted in Coburg Town Hall. With professional collectors mixed with wardrobe clear-outs, there’s a new garm waiting for everyone.
