Monday 11th November: JoJo Siwa, cat cushions & purple waistcoats
Another thing Australia can add to its CV: top for Kmart appreciation. Take this as permission to go for a late night browse tonight and fill your flat with a little bit more tat you'll never fit in your case to take home. Here's what else is going on across the city today.
The Headlines
The one and only JoJo Siwa is gracing us with her presence here in Melbourne on 22nd November. She will be performing at PICA alongside Drag Race icons Bimini and Gottmik for any Ru Paul fans out there. It would have been hard to miss the release of her debut single 'Karma' earlier in the year, with her infamous dancing causing a big stir. Now you can flail your limbs alongside Siwa herself at the TRAMP event.
What Melbourne lacks in stunning beaches, it definitely makes up for in inner-city baths. Whether you're looking to settle in for a day of sunbathing, or want to get the lengths in, there's a pool on offer for everyone. With what feels like one in just about every suburb, this handy list rounds them all up to help you decide where to head on a sunny day off. We suggest Albert Park for exercise and Prahran for vibes.
Moonlight Cinema is returning to the grounds of the Botanic Gardens from the 29th November, and the program of films has just been announced. First up is The Fall Guy, with Regina George and the rest of the Mean Girls set to grace the screen a few days later. We'll be treated to Christmas classics like Love Actually and The Holiday later in December, so if you've never watched Hugh Grant as Mr Prime Minister whilst basking in the summer sun, now's your chance. Grab your blankets and a bottle of wine for a wholesome evening in the park.
Where to Eat and Drink
Darling Group, the team behind Token and Kettle Black, are at it again. Their latest addition? Cheri, a European-inspired all-day eatery right by South Melbourne Market. The menu boasts everything from freshly baked cakes and bread to pizza and gnocchi, all waiting to be washed down with a Bloody Mary or good old flat white. The gorgeous interior and sun-soaked courtyard stinks of a silly summer Sunday afternoon.
Where to Live
For those house-hunting with a friend, two rooms are up for grabs in this sunny North Melbourne house for the summer. The one most likely to keep plants alive can shotgun the biggest room, and the other gets gorgeous views of the city skyline—a win-win, really. The god-awful creepy cat cushions are slightly terrifying, but luckily there's plenty of storage space so we're sure you can find a spot for them at the bottom of the wardrobe.
Core selling point: adorable balcony off one of the rooms.
Where to Work
Melbourne's answer to Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Luna Park, is hiring over the festive season for ride attendants. The iconic St Kilda theme park is famous for its rickety rides and retro vibe, and with this role you can ride the rollercoasters for free until all the blood rushes to your head. But just to warn you, the uniform seems to be a particularly dashing purple trousers and waistcoat combo, very unsuitable for after work drinks at The Espy.
Where to Go
At South Melbourne’s Meeya Cafe you can spend a wholesome morning painting your own white-frosted cake with coloured buttercream for $17.90—alongside their Thai-fusion brunch whilst sipping on a matcha. It’s a fun activity whether you’re a budding Picasso, or your cake would end up looking like a 5-year-old had been let loose on it. Where else can just munch on your mistakes?
