Monday 14th April: Guac-Fueled Quizzing, Underground Exploring & Sweaty Perfume
We might complain about rising rent costs and the cost of iced coffees creeping up, but the numbers don't lie—Melbourne has officially placed fourth on the list of most expensive Aussie cities. No surprises that Sydney topped the list, with Adelaide and Canberra in second and third. Here is the latest for today in Melbourne—another day being grateful to not be in Sydney.
The Headlines
No need to spend hundreds of dollars to visit Victoria's wineries anymore—we’re getting a brand new urban winery this month. Admittedly, it doesn't have the same appeal as sipping wine with a backdrop of vineyards and rolling hills, but it's the next best thing. They'll be offering tastings, workshops, and they even have a cheese room and oyster bar in-house. It's a huge 500-square-metre new venue that absolutely stinks of girls’ night.
That familiar scent of sweat, vodka, and poppers when walking into Chapel Street's iconic Poof Doof has now been turned into a fragrance by new brand Örok Fragrances—and no, this is not another April Fool's prank. That could be a slight exaggeration, and we’re sure they smell delicious—the scents are inspired by the owner's experiences on the Melbourne gay scene. Look no further for your Poof Doof loving friend's birthday present.
If you’ve exhausted Melbourne’s bars, brunch spots and bookstores, maybe it’s time to take things underground—literally. This round-up of caves near the city has everything from limestone chambers to ancient lava tubes, for the next time you fancy a little explore complete with a sexy head torch.
Where to Eat and Drink
Recent heatwave aside, cosy season has well and truly arrived. If you’re in the mood for a midweek mooch somewhere warm, The Banff in St Kilda has you covered—think log fireplace, wooden interiors and plenty of carbs. Try the linguine and mushroom ragu, or go for the salami and olive pizza. Even better, this taste of home won’t cost you a fortune. Happy hour runs Monday to Wednesday from 12pm ‘til close, and Thursday to Friday until 6pm, with $11.50 pizzas, $6 pots and $7 house wine.
Where to Live
A home in St Kilda doesn't quite have the same appeal in June as it does in Jan, but if you're optimistic about some winter sun, there's a room in this flat available for about six weeks. There's a balcony and BBQ area, which might not see much action during your stay—but never say never.
Core selling point: a nurse as a housemate. Always handy.

Where to Work
Any wordsmiths on the lookout for a new hustle, jewellery, fashion, and skincare company Camille & Stone are looking for three new content writers to support the brand's marketing strategy. With no experience needed, it's a CV-building casual role that can make you a decent $37 an hour, and there is opportunity to go full-time fairly quickly if they're impressed. Time to dust off your marketing degree and write a couple of blogs.
Where to Go
It goes against every classic event marketing strategy to advertise tacos on a Monday, but sometimes it pays to be different. Every Monday, The Railway Hotel in Fitzroy hosts a Tacos and Trivia night, where your educated guesses are sponsored by guac and chips. Trivia kicks off at 7pm, and the tacos are good enough to soften the blow when you forget who won the 1998 World Cup.
