Monday 14th October: snake sightings, magic tricks & Santa's helpers

Crazy that the winner of the Melbourne marathon yesterday finished by 9:12am—before most of us had even woken up yet. Here is the latest for your Monday in Melbourne.

The Headlines

  • We were all promised we'd be safe from the Aussie wildlife in our happy little city lives, but in absolutely terrifying news, snake sightings seem to be on the rise. New housing estates are the latest hotspot for the slimy creatures, so watch out if you've found yourself living in a four-bed family home. Good luck out there everyone.

  • If the crowds in the Acland Street bars don't make St Kilda a big enough reminder of home, this new British style caff is here to help out. The menu isn't quite pie, mash and a milky brew, but soup and bread is promised as a constant.

  • Everyone's favourite chunky penguin, Pesto, has been immortalised on the walls of Melbourne's street art district on Higson Lane. The Melbourne Sea Life's 9-month old penguin, who already towers over both of his parents, has shot to fame over the last few weeks, and now he has his very own mural commissioned by the aquarium.

Where to Eat and Drink

A25 Pizza's Monday special is the perfect way to carry on your foodie weekend a little bit longer. Most pizzas are $17 at both the South Yarra and CBD restaurants all day and if you've got some extra Monday blues, they do takeout too. The 417 backed recommendation has to be the sexy truffle—it absolutely lives up to its name.

Where to Live

This South Yarra flat is perfectly set up for girlie brunches and wine catch-ups, so your potential housemates describing themselves as ‘fun-loving girls’ really checks out. We're obsessed with the little courtyard, open-plan living spaces and check print decor throughout.

Core selling point: your own private toilet (except when guests are about).

Where to Work

There is a job opening for Santa's Helpers at David Jones in the CBD. Bound to give you a 'how did I get here?' feeling that living in Australia is all about, this temp role from November until Christmas welcomes Working Holiday Visas and sounds like a good laugh. No word on if an elf outfit is provided on the job ad, but we are sure they would kit you out in a gorgeous little red and green number.

Where to Go

One of Australia's most acclaimed magicians, Jordy Doust, is hosting a magic masterclass tonight in the CBD. If you're looking for a new party trick, a sure-fire way to impress is a couple of magic tricks up your sleeve. Suitable for all abilities, so even if you're card shuffling skills aren't up to scratch, a magic masterclass sounds like a very entertaining way to spend your Monday night. Tickets are $39.
