Monday 16th September: fairground erectors, car park parties and free floorboards

The absolute baltic temperature low on Saturday night is not what we came to Aus for.

What we did come for though is all the fun stuff the city has to offer. We’re here every morning reminding you about the very best of it.

The Headlines

  • DJ Skin on Skin is back in Melbourne after he supported Fred Again earlier this year (don’t speak to us if you managed to get tickets for that) and he is doing a series of secret shows across the city. Venues so far include the Lucky Coq, Revs and a car park in Cremorne. He seems to be releasing tickets each week on his Instagram so give him a follow to not miss this weeks release.

  • If you are hearing more Eoghan’s ordering oat flat whites in your local coffee shop, and more Aoife’s handing in their CVs at your work, it’s because a record number of Irish people are now living in Australia on Working Holiday Visa’s. Crazy that there were 21,000 visas granted last year and you still can’t get a quality pint of Guinness here.

  • There are only a few tickets left for Jorja Smith’s Melbourne gig in October. All the actual fun standing tickets are gone, so you’ll have to boogie from your seat if you’ve been unorganised and missed the general release. Keep your eye on Facebook or ticket resell sites if you’re dying to see her up close though, couldn’t blame you.

Where to Eat and Drink

When you're mooching around south and looking for a quick (but be warned, not light) lunch spot, check out Pasta Prego on Chapel St. Whopping portions and loads of tasty options, including vodka pasta alla Gigi Hadid fame, it's a great place for your work lunch break because we know you forgot to make something last night to take.

Where to Live

If you can look past the absolute state of those curtains, this flower-filled Preston "dream house" is a steal at $715 a month. It's fully furnished even down to a lemon tree and cleaning roster. In true North Melbourne style, you'd be sharing with a yogi, half marathon trainee and tattoo apprentice.

Core selling point: Floorboards throughout, unlike all the other houses where the floor is lava.

Where to Work

Unleash your inner builder and help put up amusement rides at the Royal Shows. Physical strength is a key requirement but if you managed to get your rucksack round Asia we're sure you'll manage. And, it's a way to get a tan if the sun ever comes back. Employee discount is promised so you might be able to bag some discount on your newest balcony entertainment.

Where to Go

We can’t be a Melbourne WHV newsletter without mentioning the Monday night Bingo at Nomads in St.Kilda, so please let us off. If you can face stepping foot in a hostel again, the Bingo here does have a reputation for being a good time and its about as lively as you can get on a Monday night with the top prize being a private room for the night. It takes place in Red Eye bar in Nomads, but you might be more likely to leave with pink eye, be warned.
