Monday 17th March: Tasty Tap Water, Dramatic Crashes & A New Musical

Happy St Patrick's day to all the 408,000 Irish in Melbourne, the Fifth Province is open for their biggest day of the year from 10 am, it'll be a rowdy one. Here is what else is going on today in Melbourne, and make sure to wear green and treat yourself to a Guinness or ten.

The Headlines

  • In case you've been living under a rock, Melbourne hosted the annual Grand Prix this weekend, and it was, in true Melbourne fashion, an interesting one. Unlike the glorious sunshine of previous years’ big F1 weekend, the rain made for an exhilarating race with a lot of dramatic crashes. Melbourne local Piastri didn't get his hometown glory moment as hoped, finishing 9th, while Brit Lando Norris took the prize—surely the next best thing.

  • We're not short of matcha in Melbourne, but a new big player has made its entrance to the CBD. Nana's Green Tea has often been dubbed the 'Japanese Starbucks', with a huge cult following and often very long queues. With a whopping 50 drinks to choose from including soft-serve topped matcha, and slow-brewed iced matcha, their new Bourke Street joint is open late on the weekends as an alcohol-free alternative to catch up with friends at the weekend.

  • There are many tap water-phobic people out there, and we are here to put you to rights. Melbourne officially has the best-tasting tap water in the continent, and we don't disagree. A seemingly mundane topic that can really get people passionate, an analysis of Reddit posts has revealed that we are blessed with the best. Ditch the single-use plastic and stay hydrated with our delicious, humble tap water.

Where to Eat and Drink

Penny-pinching this Monday? The Catfish in Fitzroy is a craft beer pub with 12 rotating taps spread across two levels. Famous for their Philly cheesesteaks (arguably the only ‘proper’ one you can find in Australia), you can’t go wrong spending your evening here. Monday means $5 pots and $10 pints are flowing all day long, and cheesesteaks are even cheaper than usual, starting at just $12. Tuesdays are comedy night, and their website is worth checking for gigs and events—loads of them are free!

Where to Live

A self-proclaimed rare find, this four-bed house in Brunswick is looking for a new housemate, with the room costing just $826 per month. With an eclectic mix of housemates with an array of interesting jobs, but all loving a 4 pm wine in the courtyard, it sounds like an all-round good time. A couple of prints on the wall wouldn't go amiss, so don't forget to pack your artwork, but we can't fault them on their cooking—they really look like they know how to chef up an unbelievable looking spread.

Core selling point: a cat called Pork, what an exceptional pet name.

Where to Work

South Yarra royalty, La Manna & Sons, is looking for a casual florist to join their Chapel Street precinct empire. Famous for their deli, coffee, and beautiful grocery shop, turns out they even have a florist in-house. Applicants must have floristry experience, but if you reckon you've got the knack for arranging a few stems together, who even does international reference checks? Spending 20 hours a week creating bouquets for South Yarra's finest might just be the most tranquil career move you could make.

Where to Go

Australia isn't known for its huge theatre scene, so when an iconic musical makes its way down to Melbourne, it's a big deal. Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar opens this week at the Princess Theatre following seasons in Sydney and Perth. The show will be on until the end of June, so it's one to get in the diary for a bit of wholesome sing-along to celebrate the musical's 50-year anniversary. It's not quite Wicked or the Book of Mormon, but we'll take what we can get.
