Monday 21st October: Les Mis, hi-vis & cheese by the kilo

No prizes for guessing where we went over the weekend—read on for some Brunswick-heavy recs to start your week off right. Here is what Monday has in store for you.

The Headlines

  • If you've Dreamed a Dream of seeing Les Mis live, the Stars have aligned for you One Day More. The world's longest-running musical will entertain the crowds at Rod Laver during its Aussie run of the Arena Spectacular: Les Mis Rocks. It boasts a cast and orchestra of over 65 with some familiar names in the mix—we're talking Alife Boe, Michael Ball and Matt Lucas and tickets go on sale at the end of next month.

  • We're partial to a good pizza rec around here, especially if there's a midweek deal on offer. From a quick streetside bite at Pizza Pizza Pizza to a cosy woodfired pizza fuelled night at Ladro, we are blessed with a plethora of doughy goodness. To make it even easier to plan your next pizza outing Concrete Playground has rounded up all the best spots for a slice around the city—here it is.

  • Everyone's favourite Hector's Deli have just opened their 4th location, and they have finally landed in the CBD. Hector's sandwiches don't just have to wait for WFH days or weekends anymore if you're a city worker, you can get your faves any time you like. They were the first of their kind that sparked Melbourne's sandwich deli culture, so got to be loyal to the OGs and support their new opening.

Where to Eat and Drink

Ovens Street Bakery is a hole in the wall joint tucked away on a Brunswick side street. The ever-changing specials menu of salads, roman pizzas, toasties and sandwiches made with their delicious in-house bread are to die for, along with a sweet treat selection (of course). The bakery also offers a sun-trap seating area, ideal for people-watching the locals, eating some carbs and enjoying a coffee.

Where to Go

Mediterranean Wholesalers on Sydney Road will be a familiar sight for Brunswick residents, but for those further afield, it's an Italian emporium (the largest in Australia, in fact) selling the best imported Italian essentials. For those that love wandering round Woolies and Coles, you'll have a field day in the wholesalers. Expect countless pasta shapes, cheese by the kilo, and a big selection of sauces and condiments along with a top notch selection of Italian wines—just to name the highlights.

Where to Live

A room in this stunning Brunswick flat is up for grabs from mid-November until the end of Jan. The balcony is the perfect spot for summer hosting, with plenty of seating and views of the city. There's also plenty to keep you entertained down Sydney Road too, and you can even become a regular at the Mediterranean Wholesalers.

Core selling point: the most adorable balcony breakfast bar we've ever seen.

Where to Work

If you're looking for your next random backpacker job, City of Melbourne is on the hunt for its newest lollipop (wo)men. If you’d prefer, you can refer to yourself as a School Crossing Supervisor, and can expect to earn up to $56k a year to help kids cross the road safely. Uniform is provided so if you think you'd pull off head to toe hi-vis, this could be the job for you.
