Monday 23rd September: swooping magpies, cheap wine & an overweight penguin
Whether your time in Melbourne has converted you to an AFL Superfan, or you're still clueless like us, you can't have missed the finals buzz over the weekend. One more week of finals then the only football on is the real kind (soccer, if you will). Anyway, read on for Monday's happenings.
The Headlines
Swooping magpies are back in season in Melbourne, and they’re already injuring the unsuspecting public. This map shows where the main culprits are, and it’s not looking good for Brunswick. Attacks whilst cycling seems to be the most common, so arm yourself with cable ties on your helmet and we wish you the best of luck. At least it’s not drop bear season yet.
You might have thought that we are at a disadvantage to WA, with Perth's sunsets famously being spectacular, but a few Victoria hotspots have made it to the list of best golden hour spots in Australia. It won't come as a surprise that St Kilda beach didn't quite make the top 10, but if you've managed to venture to the Great Ocean Road yet, you'll know why that made the list.
People are going crazy for SeaLife Melbourne's 'Pesto the Penguin'. After gaining internet fame for his huge size, dwarfing his pen-mates, the SeaLife centre just hosted a very Gen-Z coded gender reveal party for him complete with a blue icing cake. Our fave Pesto fact is that he got his name because his mum is called Basil, cute.
Where to Eat and Drink
We tried this South Yarra spot over the weekend and were pleasantly surprised. It has a cosy vibe and makes you feel like you're sitting in your vinyl-loving mate's house. The food menu is simple but tasty with a few salads, wraps, pizzas and daily specials but it's the drinks prices you'll stay for. $10 spritz and $8 wine make it the perfect spot to place yourself for a few hours.
Where to Live
Two negroni-loving northsiders who know how to let loose are looking for a new housemate. Some of the decor is to be desired, we're looking at you, bathroom tiles, but the room itself is unfurnished so you can add your own touch there.
Core selling point: red wine lining the mantlepiece like vodka bottles at a British uni.
Where to Work
Taco and margs lovers of Fitzroy unite. El Camino is looking for new bartenders to serve its ‘sombrero-splashed, fun-fuelled’ crowds. Smiles and personality preferred over experience so if you're not yet handy with a cocktail shaker but you back your small talk skills, you're in there.
Where to Go
If you know your Ross from your Rachel, and your Joey from your Janice, then the Richmond Club Hotel is the place for you tonight. They are hosting a one-off Friends trivia night at 7pm, so gather your Friends loving friends and cure your weekend hangover with some more beers.
