Monday 24th February: Contactless Trams, Lady Di & Lots of New Openings

Not that we needed confirmation, but Australia is officially the best place for a coffee in the world. The list of the top 100 coffee shops in the world has just been released, and the Aussies have absolutely swept up, being the most heavily featured country on the list. Proud Mary in Collingwood was Melbourne's best entry at fourth place—so if you've not given that one a go yet, this is your sign. Here is the lowdown on your Monday in Melbourne—stay caffeinated.

The Headlines

  • Some good news, and some bad news. The good news is that PTV have finally decided to join us in the 21st century and are implementing contactless payments on the trains, trams, and buses across the state. The bad news is that this initiative will only be gracing our daily journeys from early 2026. Who knows why it takes so long to pop a few card readers on the trams—guess you'll have to hang on to those Myki cards a little longer.

  • Katy Perry is heading to Melbourne, and if you're desperate to belt out Teenage Dream with thousands of other nostalgic millennials, listen up. A fresh batch of presale tickets for an extra show drop today at 10 am, with general public tickets up for grabs tomorrow at noon. Prices start at $109, with VIP packages available if you really miss the days when California Girls was a ringtone in demand.

  • We're never short of new openings to add to the ever-growing list of need-to-try places, so we thought we'd share a few of the best new ones on the block. First up, Sistine on Chapel Street, a late-night wine bar with a playful drinks menu andh a caviar vending machine. Over in Cremorne, Shokudo is putting a local spin on Japan’s konbini culture, serving grab-and-go bites alongside coffee and cocktails. And for those after proper Lebanese charcoal chicken, Habibi Chicken has arrived in Preston. A new option for every time you just can't decide where to go.

Where to Eat and Drink

We're coming at you with a public service announcement. Monday night is date night at Don's in Prahran and it really is too good to miss. Grab a lover (or a friend) and step into a stunning, intimate setting, serving up fresh pasta and top-quality wine. For $40 each, you’ll get a glass of wine, confit garlic focaccia, house-made pasta, and a chocolate and hazelnut torte—a menu so good, it almost makes being surrounded by couples worth it.

Where to Live

This room in a three-storey, two-bedroom apartment in Abbotsford is within walking distance to Vic Park station and Johnston Street and is available from the middle of March. The current tenant is just looking for a housemate who'll watch MAFS and share a cheeseboard with them—surely not too much to ask. The current cleaning schedule consists of a big refresh at the weekend, but you're more than welcome to wipe the sides mid-week if you so fancy.

Core selling point: that end-of-bed storage is really satisfying.

Where to Work

A Melbourne 417 reader favourite, today's job pick is a casual and flexible role to top up the bank balance alongside another job. Thousand Apologies is a popular hot sauce brand born and raised in Melbourne, and they are looking for a fun and energetic sales assistant to help out occasionally at market stalls across the city. The work is said to have a self-proclaimed 'social vibe', and there's plenty of free hot sauce on offer—what's not to love.

Where to Go

Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story is a highly camp and comedic celebration of the world's sweetheart, Lady Di, performed by Linus Karp. Following sold out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and hordes of five-star reviews, the show is currently on an Australian tour, gracing Melbourne tonight and tomorrow at the Gasworks Studio Theatre in Albert Park. During the show, the audience join Karp's Diana in heaven as the character spills the hilarious, and completely false, stories from her life.
