Monday 27th January: Prison Tours, Bargain Burgers & Lunar New Year
A bank holiday, in January, with 39-degree heat—it's actually quite hard to believe. Whether you’re spending it at the beach, in a beer garden, or cashing in on double pay, here’s what’s happening across the city to make the most of the day.
The Headlines
Melbourne’s festival scene is unmatched, and Beat has compiled a list of all the very best ones on offer to make sure we're not missing out. Charli XCX's upcoming Laneway appearance is one to snap up a last-minute ticket for, or book a trip to iconic bush doofs like Strawberry Fields and Tanglewood for the true Aussie experience. There are also food, wine, and film festivals if you're looking for something different. These festivals truly are your ticket to Melbourne at its best.
Melbourne are putting on a big show for the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations this week. With an extensive schedule of events, deals, and activities to browse, here’s where to find the highlights as we enter the Year of the Snake. The main event is of course the massive street party happening in the CBD all day on Sunday—so get those diaries cleared.
The winners of the men's doubles at the Australian Open celebrated in style with a McDonalds on a bench in South Yarra at 4 am on Saturday night. After beating the Italian's at 2 am, the Finn and Brit duo braved the wildness of Chapel Street Maccies in the middle of the night for a well-deserved feed, having just pocketed a cool $810,000 in prize money.
Winning a Grand Slam title at 2am, celebrating with a McDonalds at 4am on a street bench in South Yarra. A day I’ll never forget.

Where to Eat and Drink
Kickstart your week at The General Assembly, a cosy pub on the scenic South Wharf along the Yarra. Every Monday, enjoy a burger (chicken or veggie) for just $20 all day long. Swing by during happy hour, Monday to Friday, from 4 to 7 pm, and you can also enjoy $10 wines, spritzes, and $8 schooners. Not a burger fan? No worries—there's a full menu of classic pub favourites, from schnitzels to steaks. The atmosphere feels just like home, with exposed beams and live acoustic music every weekend.
Where to Live
Dr Matt squared are looking for a new housemate to complete the trio. They both enjoy a beer, good coffee, new food places, and trips to the beach and are looking for someone to fit right in. The "well-maintained townhouse" is in the heart of Carlton and is complete with a delightful courtyard and rooftop balcony—perfect for summer. Sadly, there’s no parking nearby, so this one’s not ideal for the drivers amongst us.
Core selling point: sparkly backyard fairy lights.
Where to Work
If you’re after a CV-boosting office job without the full-time hours, this part-time marketing role for UK brand Fred Perry, based in St Kilda, could be the answer. With some cool opportunities to go along to shoots, star in TikTok videos for the brand, and arrange brand activations, it's about as good as a casual two-day-a-week job gets. A degree in Marketing or a similar field is preferred—so anyone with a degree gathering dust whilst you're in Aus, it's time to brush up on your social media skills.
Where to Go
This generation seems to have a sadistic fascination with prisons and crime, and we’re no exception. Pentridge Prison in Coburg, which operated from 1851 to 1997, is now open to the public for tours. Rumour has it this was one of the most infamous prisons of its time, holding Australia’s most notorious prisoners. Pentridge is just a short tram ride from Brunswick, with tours available daily for around $40—or night tours if you’re feeling brave.
