Monday 28th October: Love Island, a kissing booth & cruising on the Yarra

It's Melbourne Cup Carnival week 1 and there are still general admission tickets remaining, so dig out your suit and/or heels ahead of a big weekend. Here is Monday's recs.

The Headlines

  • It's time to swap Jess from Stockport for Xanthe from Sydney because Love Island Australia is back on our screens tonight. There are two Melburnians in the mix, so get ready to spot them in your favourite overpriced bar in about eight weeks' time. Surprisingly, the Aus version is filmed in Mallorca and not one of the gorgeous locations this side of the hemisphere—long flight back for the first one booted out.

  • Camping might get a bad rep in Australia what with the unpredictable wildlife and endless wilderness, but it’s still something everyone must tick off the bucket list. Well this Summer, you can stay for free at 100+ campsites across Victoria, no need for wild camping anymore. Whether you're decked out in a renovated van, or if you're just working with Big W's cheapest tent, it's a lovely getaway with mates.

  • Melbourne's museum scene is about to get a whole lot sexier. Opening this December, The Museum of Desire promises a kissing booth, a boob-filled ball pit, neon vulva art and an orgasm harp—whatever that is. It's bound to be a fun rainy-day activity, but maybe not one for when the parents visit.

Where to Eat and Drink

Bricklane Bagels have 2 tasty bagel cafes in South Melbourne and Prahran, where bagel toppings are served on two halves—giving you double the filling. Along with the classics, they serve options like pastrami, Vegemite and hummus bagels (not all in one, of course) to name a few highlights. The newly opened Prahran branch is tucked away on the gorgeous Greville Street, the perfect place to sit and people-watch on their pavement tables on a sunny afternoon.

Where to Live

Got friends or family visiting for Christmas and don't fancy them taking up your sofa for a fortnight? This Cremorne sublet could be your answer. Available from the 21st Dec to the 4th Jan and definitely cheaper than an Airbnb, it looks like a lovely spot to spend the festive period.

Where to Work

Think you know your gorgonzolas from your manchegos? The Calendar Cheese Company are looking for a casual demonstrator who can share their cheese knowledge with the public and host promotional stands in stores across Melbourne. Duties include 'cheese demonstrations' (jury is out on what that entails) and chatting with customers about the products. Sounds like a brie-lliant job.

Where to Go

The weather over the weekend has confirmed to us that summer really is on the way, so what better way to celebrate than with a sail down the Yarra? If you've not yet found yourself a rich Aussie to take you out on the water, GoBoat is your next best option. From $129 per hour, you and seven mates can take in the views of Melbourne whilst cruising. You can even rent a speaker and esky or treat yourself to a captain's hat—if that floats your (go)boat.
