Monday 30th September: Oasis in Melbourne, popped balloons & 29 cheeses
We made it to the end of Swooptember—congratulations everyone. The Swooping magpies are unfortunately still very much in season though, so keep your eye on incidents around you and keep those cable ties on your bike helmet a little longer. Hope the bank holiday weekend was swoop free and fun filled, here is what Melbourne has to offer today.
The Headlines
Maybe we lied when we said no more AFL chat. One last nod to the bank holiday that was. The sun was shining, the queues were queueing and the Lions were roaring. For the novices among us who had a 50:50 shot at choosing the winning team but went with red, we're sorry. Those who went the Queensland way, congrats and we hope you celebrated in style. And for those of you just happy to be back in a busy sunny pub garden, you might well be the real winners.
If you missed out on Oasis tickets for their first UK and Ireland release, the Manchester act have announced they will be coming to Melbourne in late 2025, surely worth extending your visa for. Having not ventured down under for 20 years, their return is bound to excite Brits abroad and Northside Aussie boys alike. Anyone else shocked at the number of secret Oasis fans out there since the announcement of their reunion or just us?
The rumours were in fact, not true, Katy Perry didn't treat us to a night on Chapel St last week. If you were like this mum and daughter duo waiting on the dance floor for a live rendition of Roar, we salute you for trying. Hopefully, you got your 2010s pop fix from her pre-game concert instead, despite the popped balloon girl stealing the show.
Where to Eat and Drink
Studley Park Boathouse, between Kew and Abbotsford, is a gorgeous little spot on the Yarra with waterfront tables, perfect for an afternoon drink. It’s away from the hustle and bustle, so an ideal place to take visiting parents or if you’re needing some peace and quiet. They describe themselves with the classic restaurant buzzword ‘Modern Australian’ cuisine, meaning they serve avo toast for brunch and posh schnitzel and calamari during the day.
Where to Work
Bread Club in North Melbourne is hiring for a casual kitchen hand, and the list of perks is unbelievable. Offering free coffee and lunch every day, bread to take home, AND your job is baking cookies—sounds like a dream. The only requirement is some level of knife skills, but if you're a novice in the kitchen it's nothing a quick Gordon Ramsay YouTube video can't fix.
Where to Live
Rooms are usually sold as one or the other, but this one up for grabs in Preston is described as both spacious and cosy—what a treat. The ad doesn't explicitly state that you have to be a medical professional, but judging by the housemates, if you do save lives for a living you'll fit right in.
Core selling point: outdoor space reserved for suitcase storage.
Where to Go
Apologies in advance for anyone lactose intolerant. Cucinetta in South Yarra have a 29-cheese gnocci on offer until 6th October, and it features cheeses that definitely sound made up like 'Squacquerone', 'Secret of the Forest' and 'Drunken Buffalo'. What better way to further drain your bank account (setting you back $36.90) after the weekend and spend a Monday lunch getting yourself in a cheese coma. Share house/hostel toilet users, be warned.
