Monday 6th January: Tennis Time, Annual Leave Hack & Rich Doctors
Whitehaven has (unsurprisingly) been named the very best beach in the world, with Victoria's very own Squeaky Beach coming in at number two. Huge flex if you've ticked both of them off the bucket list during your time over here. Have a read of what's going on today while you picture yourself back on the golden sands.
The Headlines
Soi 38, one of Melbourne’s most legendary and beloved eateries, closed its doors last year, but the good news is they’ve reopened in a new location. The old spot in a CBD car park was known for its authentic Thai street food, complete with metal chairs and tables, and long queues, and it looks like nothing has changed. With more space and a couple of tasty additions to the classic menu, check out the new location at 235 Bourke Street.
If you've succeeded in securing a real corporate job down under, then first of all, congratulations. But second of all, here is how you can maximise your annual leave in line with the abundance of public holidays that Victoria has to offer. When planning your next trip to Tassie, or booking in your big Perth weekender, take a look at how to secure ten days off in April for just three days of annual leave, along with many more hacks for the rest of the year.
Most of us could only dream of a $114k salary, but then again, most of us didn't spend 5 years at medical school. This article covers the financial profile and weekly spending habits of a 26-year-old junior doctor from the UK living in Melbourne, and it makes a great read. She covers her rent and savings, as well as her trip to Peggy Gou and $90 small plates dinner—classic. With junior doctors earning a decent chunk more over here than back home, you can see why so many make the trip.
Where to Eat and Drink
Farro Pizza has eight eateries across Melbourne, each with a slightly different feel to fit its area. They use organic spelt for their pizza, giving them a more earthy, savoury flavour, which the staff are very passionate about. They also boast very good options for GF and vegan diners, which can be hard to find in a pizzeria. With tasty cocktails, Peroni on tap, and a real Italian feel, Farro is perfect for a street-side people-watching suburban dinner.
Where to Live
This entire South Yarra flat is available for a week at the end of the month. The perfect spot to for your visitors to stay, with gorgeous views of the city, pool, sunbathing deck, BBQs, and cabanas in the complex too. There's also a tennis court if you catch the bug watching the Open and fancy your hand at the net.
Core selling point: a glimpse of the hot air balloons i you wake up early enough.
Where to Work
Back again with yet another AO job, albeit little last minute. Harry the Hirer is after Event Labourers for the jam-packed summer season of events coming up. With work at events including the AO, F1 and the races, this job could have you hopping between all the biggest gigs in town. Requirements include a white card, so if you've secured that, you're good to go. Spend these sunny days putting up marquees, unloading trucks, and trying to catch a glimpse of the sport stars.
Where to Go
Following on from that, get ready for this to become a borderline tennis newsletter for the next few weeks, qualifying for the Australian Open begins today meaning the action officially kicks off. Grounds passes for the first few days come as cheap as $15 for you to get a glimpse of some future stars and a nosey at Melbourne Park before it gets swamped next week. There are plenty of other warm-up events going on throughout the rest of the week if you can't contain the excitement any longer.
