Monday 7th October: TikTok cheesecake, pint price outcry & guilt-ridden thrills
Happy back-to-school day everyone. The streets may be quieter, but brace yourself for the rowdy after-school tram crowds—there are no winners really. Nevertheless, here is what’s happening around Melbourne on Monday.
The Headlines
The Weeknd graced Marvel Stadium this weekend, and one man in the crowd decided it was his turn for five seconds of fame. He somehow found himself on stage trying to give the singer a hug. One too many Bundabergs was it?
We've all had to avert our eyes when tapping our cards at the bar, trying not to flinch at the cost of a round. But one Melbourne man couldn’t hold back his outrage after being charged $42.10 for just 2 pints of ginger beer. His frustration started a Reddit thread, sparking a broader discussion about Melbourne’s steep alcohol prices—reportedly up 6% since February. With Australia having the third-highest beer tax in the world (only beaten by the famously pricey Scandinavian countries), it seems the only safe haven left is Happy Hour.
We've already discussed the famous to tap or not to tap debate when it comes to getting around the city. Now, allow us to recommend this feature written by a self-proclaimed bus fare evader, who views not tapping the old Myki card as a form of urban rebellion—swapping lawful bus rides for a guilt-ridden thrill. Worth a read whether you're a law-abiding rider or like to risk it from time to time.
Where to Eat and Drink
If you haven't seen Lulu & me—the pay-by-weight cheesecake shop in Collingwood—all over your Instagram and TikTok recently, there must be something wrong with your algorithm. We visited over the weekend to see what all the fuss is about, and we hate to say it but it's worth the hype. After queueing in the cool, minimalist warehouse-style building, you can sample a few cheesecakes before you buy by weight. The classic Basque was absolutely to die for and the coffee is banging too, thoroughly recommend.
Where to Live
Croissant lovers, listen up. There's a room available from Nov 18th in this lovely Brunswick flat, and the current tenant is a pastry chef. Your own bathroom, garden rooftop and sweet treats on tap—what's not to love?
Core selling point: karaoke bar across the road.
Where to Work
Retail jobs that let you apply online instead of facing the dreaded CV handout day are the real unsung heroes. This Christmas temp role at Bonds in South Wharf also comes with the chance of extending if you can survive the busy period. Plus, there’s a tasty 50% discount if you're looking for some new gym kit for your Sunday morning Albert Park walks.
Where to Go
Melbourne's longest-running comedy night is on every Monday night, and it's still a popular one every week. Comedy at Spleen in the CBD boasts some big names (despite no alumni we have heard of, as per), and is the best way to liven up a sleepy Monday. Another bonus is that tickets are only $12, even less than a pint.
