Monday 9th December: Woolies Returns, Croissant Chefs & 241 Margs
In today's instalment of things they didn't tell us about before moving to Australia—the "summer bug eruption" has officially arrived. We'll leave you with that to worry about while you read about how to spend your Monday (minus any Christmas cockroaches, we hope).
The Headlines
The fear of walking into Woolies and facing a sea of bare shelves is finally over. An agreement has been reached between the big dogs and the warehouse workers, meaning normal business can resume. The strikes are said to have cost the chain a whopping $50 million already, but we're sure they'll survive. No more makeshift meals, just in time for Christmas.
Over the summer and Christmas period, everyone has officially come out of hibernation for catch-ups and happy hours—so if you're looking to venture outside of your local, here is a round-up of Melbourne's best bars for summer to add to your to-go list. Of course, heavily featuring the best beer gardens and rooftops, from the likes of Naked for Satan to Dr Morse.
A brand new pier has opened in St Kilda, and rumour has it, it cost $53 million to build. It was launched in a very underwhelming ceremony with some dull cheers from the crowd, and locals don't seem too thrilled about the new opening. Commenters questioned the need for the new landmark, with it looking like a pretty bog-standard pier, and of course the extortionate cost.
Where to Eat and Drink
If you're not quite ready to wave goodbye to the weekend, Hotel Nacional's Monday Margaritas could be your fix. It's a 2-4-1 deal with a some fun flavours in the mix, like blood orange, smokey mezcal, pink grapefruit, and even a touch of frozen passion fruit. You’ll find this gorgeous Mexican-inspired rooftop on Hardware Lane in the CBD with some delightful city views. One to add to the list for a sunny evening even if you can't face any more drinks until later in the week.
Where to Live
For $350 a week, this room in a Clifton Hill house is all yours. It's also home to Jessy, a two-year-old Kelpie ready and waiting for walks and treats—no photo included, but you can judge the cuteness when you go and look around. The garden is calling out for some summer BBQ hosting.
Core selling point: sage green bathroom tiles.
Where to Work
One of Melbourne's most famous bakeries, Lune Croissanterie, is hiring for a kitchen hand in their Fitzroy location. It's a dangerous place to work, with the very tempting pastry they churn out everyday and their ever-changing menu, which you'd no doubt be tasting. It's a casual role, and they are hiring for the lead-up to Christmas—just in time to sample their December special turkey croissant.
Where to Go
Everyone loves a photo booth, and all too often these days, the photo strips are plastered in some kind of logo. Well, Flinders Street is home to a popular original 1970's photo booth, pumping out the cutest sepia and black & white pics for decades now. No tacky logos in sight—just classic grainy pics. Everyone knows you look your best in a photo booth pic, so if your Instagram is looking a bit dry at the moment, you know where to go next time you're in the CBD.
