Thursday 11th September: caramelised cornflakes, emergency toilet & Melbourne after dark
Apologies for talking about weather, but the overused Melbourne tag-line ‘FoUr SeAsOnS iN a DaY’ rang true yesterday with a sprinkling of snow appearing after a full thunderstorm and a sunny morning. Today, the sun is shining, and here is how you can enjoy it.
The Headlines
The days of trying to keep up with the Aussie early risers might well be behind us. Melbourne's retail scene is thriving in the evenings with a whopping 34% increase in after-work spending. Most of the action is happening in the North and Western suburbs (Brunswick we're looking at you). Maybe you can cancel that 6am alarm you keep snoozing once and for all.
A new brewery has recently opened on Brunswick’s Sydney Road, offering beers brewed on-site. Open a modest three days a week, Subculture is a cosy new local with vinyls and even a free arcade cabinet if you’re missing your Xbox.
If you do happen to meet the love of your life in South Yarra tonight (read on), have we got the perfect spot for date two. A 5,000 square-foot inflatable fun park is coming to Melbourne and it promises fun for all ages.
Where to Go
Thursday has infiltrated the dating world over the last couple of years. This week's target? The Emerson Lounge in South Yarra. A room full of singles mixed with $10 vodkas sounds like the perfect recipe for waking up in some navy sheets on Friday morning. Tickets limited, some more due to drop today.
Where to Eat
Bread Club has two branches (Albert Park and North Melbourne) and is a popular bakery with gorgeous looking bread and even more gorgeous almond croissants (we even got given free cookies when we went, but not making any promises). The Albert Park one is the perf place to meet a friend and grab coffee and a pastry for a morning walk. A caramelised cornflake donut has cereal in it, so counts as breakfast, right?
Where to Live
This house is perfect for those who fled to Canggu for winter and are returning with a bout of Bali belly. Why? There's a spare toilet reserved for when you need to quote 'punish the porcelain'. Great location once you've recovered, just a stroll away from the gems in South Melbourne market.
Core selling point: can't be anything other than the bog really, can it.
Where to Work
The South Melbourne branch of Betty’s Burgers is looking for casuals. With a tasty 50% off employee discount you can reject the Aussie healthy lifestyle and get paid whilst doing so. No mention of whether you get the classic denim apron thrown in with the deal, but fingers crossed for you.
