Thursday 13th March: Balcony Beers, Hand-Pulled Noodles & Laughs on Tap

It seems the Kneecap chaos isn't quite over yet. They've got sold out shows on tonight and tomorrow at 170 Russell St so congrats if you got tickets for the absolute men of the moment. If not, here's how you can spend your time instead.

The Headlines

  • If you've not watched Drive to Survive, and F1 means nothing more to you than how your medic mates refer to their first year out of uni, you're not alone. This very handy all-you-need-to-know article will help you get involved in all the Grand Prix chat ahead of the big event this weekend. Give it a read and you'll be able to confidently debate how well you think Lewis Hamilton will do in his first race with Ferrari. A sport famous for its drama and backstories, you'll be gripped a few sentences in.

  • Finally, a competition you might actually have a chance at winning. If you love a good day of doing absolutely nothing, then this one's for you. Space Out challenges contestants to sit in silence and zone out for as long as possible. Laughing, checking your phone, or falling asleep will get you disqualified—so if you can't go 10 minutes without a doom scroll, this might not be your event. The ideal candidate probably raw dogs everything they do and isn't afraid of their own thoughts. Not exactly a thrilling spectator sport but we're open to our minds being changed.

  • You need to start filling the calendar for winter—because the more plans you make, the faster the sun comes back—and RISING Festival is the perfect place to start. It's set to take over various CBD venues for 12 days in June with Suki Waterhouse just revealed as the main act. You can expect more than just music though with art installations, exhibitions and film screenings making up the rest of the program. Tickets for most events are on sale now if you want to get some culture booked in early.

Where to Eat and Drink

Today’s pick is another cheap, but of course, delicious eat. Biang Biang Noodles, located on Elizabeth Street and Swanston Street, originally opened in Sydney but became so popular that they expanded to Melbourne, and it’s easy to see why. Their hand-pulled noodles are made fresh daily, and the generous portions are packed with flavour. Biang Biang was founded with a passion for preserving the ancient noodle hand-pulling tradition of Xi’an while incorporating modern flavours. The best part? Most dishes are under $20.

Where to Live

Beers on a Fitzroy balcony is on the cards for the lucky newest member of this "little crew". This share house is right in the thick of all the best stuff Fitzroy has to offer and comes complete with a balcony and patio for your morning coffee. Your future housemates are either very Aussie or trying too hard with all the usuals interests: VB, AFL and parmas. Available from next week for $1193 a month, hit them up if you're keen (their words not ours).

Core selling point: ham & cheese croissants on tap.

Where to Work

It's a somewhat rite of passage to work in a hostel during a travelling stint. Don't worry we're not about to suggest you spend any longer than necessary in Nomads. The Mansion is looking for a new all-rounder to join the team so if you can brave cleaning a dorm bathroom and have a trick or two up your sleeve to keep a group of backpackers entertained, this could be the role for you. An added bonus is that it's not a live-in role so you can go back to your comfy bed after checking people into the top bunk all day.

Where to Go

Laughs on Tap takes place at the Speakeasy Theatre every Thursday with a lineup boasting some of Melbourne's top comedians. Tickets start at $11, and there's free pizza on offer, so at least you'll be fed even if the Aussie humour doesn't quite hit. Cheap drinks are also on the menu, making it a solid midweek plan whether you're after a good laugh or just a few cheap pints.
