Thursday 14th November: Olivia Dean, AI trolleys & mac and cheese croquettes
As Melbourne has been ranked 6th in the world for adrenaline-seekers today, we hope you spend today doing something absolutely crazy. Get yourself down to Luna Park or go and find some sharks. Aside from that, here is how else to spend your Thursday.
The Headlines
We thought Amazon Fresh was futuristic, but now Coles have come through with AI trolleys, trailing in Richmond Traders Coles. Think of it like a moving self-checkout, where you can bag your groceries on the move, even kitted out with a little screen on the trolley. The trial will be in full swing from January, but there are some demos in store already. If anything will convince you to actually do a weekly shop rather than trotting down to the supermarket multiple times a day, surely it's this.
A sunny afternoon at the pub really is a universal love language, and aren't we lucky that Melbourne has so many on offer. We already divulged some of our favourites in honour of National Happy Hour Day earlier this week, but we're back to share this definitive list of the 22 very best Melbourne pubs. Whether you're looking for a good Irish spot as a reminder of home or prefer to embrace the Aussie vibe, this is a handy guide to help you plan the perfect route for your weekend pub crawl—PSA it's 32 degrees on Saturday.
The queen of the moment, Olivia Dean, is finally gracing us with a show next Feb. Having already been announced as a Laneway headliner, it was only a matter of time until she released some extra dates. General sale tickets drop this morning at 10 a.m., so rally the girls and pray to the Ticketek gods if you want to be treated to her gorgeous voice echoing around The Forum in the CBD.
Where to Eat and Drink
If you’re a St Kilda local, chances are you have dined at Rococo. It's a fun, modern restaurant serving staple, simple Italian dishes. We haven't found many places doing it better—and they know it too, giving themselves the modest 'Best Italian Restaurant in Melbourne' title. Their pasta is freshly made in house and their ingredients are sourced from the Italian countryside. Our recommendation is the meatball pizza and the mac and cheese croquettes. They also have an extensive vegan menu, and other locations in Hawthorn and Point Cook.
Where to Live
Yesterday was for the boys so it's only right we throw one in today for the girls. These South Yarra girls are looking for someone to join them in their clean and tidy house. Lots of emphasis on the cleanliness, sounds like they've had some messy applicants in the past so if you're a Dishmatic whizz, you might be in luck. It's all yours to fill with mates after the 25th Jan too (cleanliness at your discretion).
Core selling point: not one single crumb on the kitchen surfaces.
Where to Work
Holey Moley needs casual bar and front-of-house staff to keep the hole-in-ones rolling. Arguably the definition of forced fun, it would be your job to keep the guests entertained and convince them they've not wasted $20. You could definitely make the shifts fly though by playing spot the first date or by watching that one director get too drunk at the corporate party.
Where to Go
Bodhi & Ride is a spin studio with locations in South Yarra, Brunswick and the CBD, and their speciality is a super fun and energetic workout. The classes in their ‘dark, hot and steamy’ studio are often themed, so strap in for One Direction, Taylor Swift or Charlie XCX classes, whatever floats your boat. It does come with a hefty price tag, but they have an offer for 3 classes for $50 with $50 cash back, so…free.
