Thursday 17th October: Raygun statue, free beard trims & dating on the Yarra

Big congrats if you got Laneway tickets, and commiserations if you were planning on getting them at a later date and were shocked to see them sold out (or if you're finding out now). Here are our recs for today in Melbourne.

The Headlines

  • In wholesome news, Movember's pop-up barber shop is hitting Fed Square today. Whether you're looking for a final tidy-up before taking the plunge next month or just want to hear more from the team about their men's health mission, they'll be there until 9pm this evening. There's also a free Lululemon-sponsored yoga class from noon if you want to get involved but aren't the proud owner of a beard that needs trimming.

  • Australia's favourite gelato spot, Messina, has launched a range available to buy at Woolies, so you can now enjoy it in the comfort of your own home. Known for their unique flavours and cool stores, their new launch includes six flavours of gelato and three frozen desserts in jazzy packaging, setting you back $14.40–30. Unfortunately, there’s no try-before-you-buy like in their stores, but no doubt they'll all be delicious.

  • If you haven't been living under a rock, you will have seen viral Australian Olympian Raygun's noteworthy performance in street dancing over the summer in Paris. To commemorate this iconic performance, a slightly terrifying homemade statue of her has been erected on a street in Northcote. Hats off to the passionate fan, but we wouldn't blame you for wanting to cross the street if you saw it at night.

Where to Eat and Drink

Good Days Hot Bread is an independent bahn mi gem on Sydney Road in Brunswick. With a communal bench-style interior and some tasty twists on the classics, it's definitely worth a visit. They also serve a very good coffee, and a classic Vietnamese iced coffee if you're wanting your fix. Choosing between Good Days and the iconic A1 Bakery across the road can be tough—Brunswick’s lunch offerings are unmatched.

Where to Live

This six month Carlton sublet will see you right through until autumn when it's time to escape Melbourne for the cold months again. You'd live with three self-proclaimed "very cool" girls who want to make a new friend for the summer. The house is beautifully decorated and boasts high ceilings and stained glass windows—delightful.

Core selling point: not one but two extremely comfy-looking sofas.

Where to Work

One for the night owls, this chain of clubs around the city is looking for new promo and door staff. Shifts start at 9 pm and last up to seven hours, so a 7/11 trip for a Red Bull en route might be necessary. Your main job will be to build excitement around these undisclosed events, but if you can close your eyes and imagine Southbank is the Zante strip, you'll be well on your way.

Where to Go

Thursday has infiltrated the dating world over the last couple of years. This week's target? Yarra Botanica. A floating bar full of singles on a sunny spring evening sounds like the perfect recipe for waking up in some navy sheets on Friday morning. There are only pre 8pm tickets left for the brave daters among us who don't need to get drunk first.
