Thursday 19th December: $2 Swims, Baked Goods & Love Actually Haters

The most expensive Melbourne house sale of 2024 has been revealed, and let's put it this way, we don't think we'll be seeing this on Fairy Floss anytime soon. Have a nosey after you've read about what's going on today.

The Headlines

  • Outdoor pool season is well and truly here, and for Carlton and North Melbourne residents, it's about to get even sweeter. For the whole of Jan, entry to these two baths will be just $2. They're already a cheap day out, so it would be rude not to. If you’re not up for travelling and don't mind forking out an extra fiver, here's a reminder of all the other best outdoor pools in the city.

  • It's no secret that Melbourne has a silly amount of unbelievable bakeries—the list is simply too long to try them all. To make life easier, here is a round up of the best bakeries in Melbourne to try on your next weekend pastry run. Our personal favourite from the picks is of course cheesecake heaven Lulu & Me in Collingwood, but this very long and detailed list (including many we haven't tried yet) is bad news for our bank accounts.

  • Ganni has really burst on to the scene recently, with everyone dying to look like the super-cool Scandi girls dressed in their iconic ballet flats and graphic tees. The trend has made it all the way to Aus, as Ganni recently opened its first location here in the CBD. While the price tags might be slightly outside the backpacker budget, it’s still more affordable than most designers if you want to treat yourself. Regardless, it's worth having a nosey and trying on some bits if you're in the area.

Where to Eat and Drink

Green Man’s Arms is a favourite among Melbourne's vegan community and meat lovers alike. Nestled in the heart of Carlton, it's a quintessential Melbourne pub complete with a fully plant-based menu filled with local produce and drinks from nearby breweries. We recommend the 'chorizo’ focaccia plate or the mushroom ‘eye fillet’ steak. For dessert? This pistachio Panacotta looks absolutely banging.

Where to Live

If the idea of a $2 swim is so appealing to you that you'd consider moving around the corner, you're in luck. There's space in this cute Carlton spot available in the new year. The housemates claim to have the socialising-individual time balance nailed down but promise they love a good trip to the pub. It has quite a few quirky features, including a freestanding Victorian-style bath if you can look past 1) it being a share house and 2) the weird half wall there to prop up the tap—very odd.

Core selling point: the tablecloth does a great job of masking the weeds.

Where to Work

If reading about the best bakeries in Melbourne has got you in a baked-goods kind of mood, why not work in one? Baker Bleu (regretfully not on the best bakery list—oops) is opening a new location in Cremorne and they are hiring for a whole new team to work front of house there from January. The location is opening in a new development, where the staff can use the rooftop garden, sauna and showers—what a perk. New opening means multiple roles, and more chance of employment...no more handing out your CV.

Where to Go

Another day, another seasonal theatre show. 'Love Actually? The Musical Parody' is in Melbourne until the 23rd, and it sounds like a funny one. Claiming to appeal to both Love Actually lovers and haters, this parody follows nine quirky couples with a few corny songs thrown in for good measure. Tickets start at $69, and the show is being held at the Athenaeum Theatre in the CBD.
