Thursday 20th February: Restaurant Royalty, European Charm & An Aussie Icon
Welcome to any new subscribers who spotted our flyers at The Girls Bathroom show last night. And to those who’ve been here a while—if you enjoy starting your mornings with The Melbourne 417, we’d love you to share this link with a friend. After you've done that, have a browse through what's going on in Melbourne today.
The Headlines
The 'restaurant royalty' team behind iconic London restaurant, St John's, has announced a cameo at the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival at the end of March. These guys have made a very big name for themselves back in the UK, and now for five days only they will take over French Saloon in the CBD. Vegans look away, their interesting menu has been known to feature ingredients like jellied rabbit, calf's liver, devilled kidneys and bone marrow.
The great water bottle debate rages on, and Frank Green is making its move with a brand-new flagship store right here in Melbourne. Naturally, it’s at Chadstone—but it’s worth the trip just to see all of the iconic colours and styles in front of your very eyes with even a chance for personalisation on offer. You leave the house with it in hand almost as often as your phone so it's only fair to have one you're proud of.
Everyone knows about the famous suburb culture of Fitzroy, St Kilda and Brunswick, but we raise you, Williamstown. An often overlooked suburb, it has been said to rival the vibes of Albert Park, but with Victorian architecture and unmatched West Melbourne views of the city and ocean. It's home to one of Melbourne's most iconic event venues, the Seaworks Maritime Precinct, but it has much more to offer than that, with plenty of rooftops, pubs and brasseries to entertain you. Sounds like a lovely weekend activity looking around a hidden gem of Melbourne.
Where to Eat and Drink
Melbourne’s laneways are known for their European charm, packed with cafés and hidden coffee spots—but Degraves Espresso still manages to stand out. Tucked away on the iconic Degraves Street, this beloved staple offers a classic European-style dining experience, complete with pavement seating and a tapas menu that works for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. And, of course, no visit is complete without trying their signature coffee blend.
Where to Live
This flat in Middle Park has a room going, and the view is so good you'd never want to leave. It's worth paying the $400 per week just to stare at the sunsets every night. Living with one girl, aside from the view it's a super cosy modern flat, plus fully furnished which is always a perk.
Core selling point: It even has an outdoor pool for when you fancy a swim in unsalted water.
Where to Work
Calling any true crime fans, Epiq is a transcription service looking for a new Court Monitor to provide transcriptions of court cases in and around Melbourne. The role involves recording and annotating court proceedings, sometimes live in the actual courtroom, and luckily no legal background or education is required, just strong admin skills. It's your chance to immerse yourself in the riveting crime scene of Melbourne, and hear more about cases like the Pokemon card theft scandal that has been taking over the headlines this week.
Where to Go
The queen is well and truly in town, and we are Spinning Around. Aussie icon Kylie kicks off the first of three shows at Rod Laver Arena tonight, and to our surprise, there are still a few tickets left. A bottle of her special sparkling rosé and a boogie to I Can't Get You Out of My Head is the perfect recipe for a gorgeous Thursday night.
