Thursday 28th November: dance coaching, marathon running & the end of the Myki card?

Australia's deadliest animals have been revealed, and the list is somewhat humbling to the scared Brits among us. Any guesses on number one? Answers tomorrow. Whilst you ponder, here's what's going on around Melbourne today—stay safe out there.

The Headlines

  • Whether you bang out a 10km run before breakfast every morning or dragging yourself to the treadmill once a week is more your style, you have plenty of time to prepare to run 26 miles in the 2025 Melbourne Marathon next October. Registrations have just opened, and you'll be pleased to know the big event also includes a half marathon, 10km, 5km, and even a modest 2.5km. The course weaves along the coast and through Albert Park, so it's time to get into the Aussie fitness spirit and get training.

  • There's no better summer activity than a bottomless brunch, so here is a handy round-up of 21 of the best spots about town for a spot of food and free-flowing booze. From a wild drag bingo brunch to a curry to soak up the unlimited alcohol, there's every type of brunch you could ever dream of. There are even drink packages from as little as $29 for unlimited tipples—what was that people said about Melbourne being expensive?

  • In the news we've all been waiting for, Melbourne is finally on its way to letting us use a bank card on public transport. There is a catch, though—of course—it's currently just in trial mode on four bus lines in Wangaratta, wherever that is. All we can do is sit and hope that the residents of north-eastern Victoria do the right thing so it can be rolled out across the state. Not sure how much longer we can face the dreaded “Have I got money on my Myki card” feeling when the inspectors (pigs) get on board.

Where to Eat and Drink

If you're looking for a relaxing escape from the bustle of the city, head to The Baths at Middle Brighton Beach. Dine in the upstairs waterfront restaurant for picturesque views of Port Philip Bay and a stunning city skyline backdrop. We suggest booking a table at sunset to enjoy some sophisticated Australian bites paired with expertly selected wines while watching the sun go down—what a dream. If that feels a bit extra for a Thursday, there's a café downstairs, perfect for some fish and chips after a cold-water sea dip.

Where to Live

Simply looking at this Brunswick unit (just call it a flat) is stressing us out. There's a lot going on—you've got the tie-dye bedsheets hanging from the walls, a carpe diem stained glass window, a music slash yoga slash bedroom and a garden that looks ready to accept paying plant-buying customers. The good news is, it's a full lease transfer, so you can gut it and start again—the window has to stay though.

Core selling point: "unique mural" whatever that means.

Where to Work

This kid's summer camp is looking for dance coaches to keep kids entertained over the holidays. No experience is necessary, so if you've got a few TikTok dance routines up your sleeve, the job's all yours. You’ll need a working with children check obviously, but once you're in, the pay is pretty decent. No word on whether the interview involves interpretive dance or not, but it can't hurt to have one prepared.

Where to Go

Not your average sticky-floor, beer-soaked answer sheet pub quiz—Compass Pizza in Brunswick hosts a fun trivia night on a Thursday. Rather than disappointing pub grub, tuck into a tasty pizza while you try to impress your teammates with minimal general knowledge. With some of the prizes on offer being self-described as 'crap' and featuring a game of 'Knobs and Knockers', sounds like an entertaining Thursday night.
