Thursday 30th January: Casino Carnage, Gig Announcements & the Rave Cave
The first week of the new season of MAFS Australia is well underway, and if you're not watching, what are you doing? As trashy as it is, just a few days in and there is already plenty of drama to sink your teeth into. Here’s the latest from Melbourne today before you park yourself on your sofa at 7:30pm.
The Headlines
Drake has just touched down in Melbourne, and he's really showing us all how the other half live. He rocked up in his $185 million private jet and is staying in the $25,000-per-night presidential suite of the Crown Towers on the Southbank. His first stop was the casino, where he posted chips on his Instagram story totalling an estimated $550,000. Drake is in Aus for his upcoming tour, but if you're hoping to catch him in the wild, think of where you can spend the most amount of money possible, and you'll probably find him there.
We've got some bad news—not only is the Aussie sun bad for our skin, but it might be to blame for that dry hair of yours too. Back home, you were probably more worried about rain ruining your fresh trim than UV damage, but out here, it’s a problem. The heat can dry out your hair, fade colour, and leave it feeling like straw—so if your mop has been looking a little worse for wear since moving, that might be why. This article breaks down the best ways to protect your locks while soaking up the sun. Just one more thing to worry about while trying to survive a beach day without ending up looking like a Squashie.
If we asked you to name two UK artists who couldn’t be further apart, The Courteeners and Central Cee would be a solid shout. No, there’s no surprise collab on the way—but they have both just announced Melbourne shows. The indie band will grace The Forum on 27 March, while rapper Central Cee will be hitting Rod Laver Arena on 28 June as part of his world tour. Very different vibes, but both worth adding to the diary.
Where to Eat and Drink
Today's pick is another EatClub regular: Meat and Greek on Chapel Street. It’s a top tier, authentic-feeling Greek spot, and their platters for three can easily serve your whole friendship group. They usually offer at least 20% off on EatClub—practically giving the gyros away. Our favourites are the chicken skewer souvlaki wrap ($15.50) and, of course, the HSPs. Contrary to the name, they also have plenty of veggie and vegan options—go for the falafel, and you won’t be disappointed.
Where to Live
This late-night jazz and bush techno-loving group of mates are after a new housemate to fill a room in their Carlton townhouse for a month until early March. If you can look past the quite frankly terrifying-looking bedroom and just focus on the super cool backyard, it's perfect. It's a bargain room for what sounds like a month of party vibes to really get you into the northside Melbourne spirit.
Core selling point: The collection of stolen signs in the yard.
Where to Work
Thornbury Post Office is looking for staff to help keep the locals in check. Basically, $25 an hour to help the oldies weigh their parcels or pay the bills. It doesn't sound like there's any danger of you being made to don a hi-vis and go out on the delivery run, but you never know. Surely there's a chance of some discount on the next parcel back home—save yourself a fortune.
Where to Go
The Timber Yard will be taken over from today by The Other Art Fair, making it the place to be this weekend for all the creatives reading. Presented by Saatchi Art, the event will feature over 100 independent artists showcasing a range of work, from photography and digital art to sculpture and painting. The 'rave cave' is intriguing us—it promises to bring sound, image, art, and music together in one experience. Other highlights include stick-and-poke tattoo station, DJs and Longrain and Nico's taking over the catering, need we say more?
