Thursday 3rd October: free ice cream, Charli XCX & planting trees
If you haven’t pulled a sickie in a while, surely today’s the day. Time to finally get the factor 50 out and bask in the sun. Back to rain all weekend though, of course. Here is what's happening on this sunny day in Melbourne.
The Headlines
Brat summer might well be here to stay if the rumours are true. There are whisperings that Chari XCX could be headlining Laneway Festival in Feb next year. The official lineup drops next week, but clues are popping up in the shape of a brat-coloured laneway that the pop icon could be bringing Apple down under—iconic if true tbh.
Airtasker is Australia's best-kept money-making secret, and this man has just made himself a millionaire with just a few K-Mart supplies. On the site that lists odd jobs from the public—anything from house viewings to car repairs, this guy who moved to Melbourne nine years ago completes bond cleans and makes himself a tasty $1400 a day. It’s worth having a browse if you're strapped for cash.
Leon Bridges is making his return to Aus for his biggest headline tour to date in January. If you haven’t heard of the American soul/blues/general good tunes singer, a couple of hours on Spotify and you'll be securing your tickets for next year. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 11am, so get those alarms set.
Where to Eat and Drink
New openings are popping up all over the city at the moment, but there's one we're particularly excited about today. South Yarra's Green Cup is moving a few spots down Chapel St into a bigger canteen-style space. They're giving away freebies all weekend so get yourself down for cheap chicken bowls, Mecca gift bags, and nourish bowls, of course.
Where to Live
Two Brits abroad are seeking a new roommate, who, of course, must love a pint in the sun, a good old pub quiz, and living in close proximity to an Aldi. The flat itself is in a prime location if you're a Fitzroy Market or Naked For Satan frequenter and for once, they're not lying about the natural light.
Core selling point: dinner with a side of TV.
Where to Work
This casual job as a 'Tree Planter' is about as classic random backpacker job as it gets. If you feel the need to offset your whopping carbon footprint from flying over here, then why not get paid $30 an hour to plant trees. Only requirements are a car and a white card, and they're even offering free flights across Australia. They say in the job ad that no two days are the same, so maybe one day planting trees and the next planting bushes? Who knows.
Where to Go
If you think your unmatched general knowledge can earn you a friend or two, there's a pub quiz being hosted by the Working Holiday Girls Group tonight (sorry boys). Tickets are $15, you get a free glass of wine on arrival, and it sounds like the questions might actually be on topics you know a thing or two about.
Where to Get Free Ice Cream
Bonus feature today, Billy van Creamery is giving out free ice cream from 11am-2pm today at Wesley Place. What a day for it. Enjoy.
