Thursday 6th March: Shark Spotting, Fireworks & Groove Armada

Australia might be ahead of the times with a lot of things, but a new stat has revealed that Australian men still do 50% less housework than women, the same figure as 20 years ago. Girls, today is a good day to tell your male housemates or boyfriends to take the bins out, for feminism. Here is what’s going on in Melbourne today.

The Headlines

  • We seem to think we are safe down here in Victoria from the horrors often found in the sea in NSW and Queensland, but it turns out the sharks do venture down here occasionally. There was a huge shark spotted at a popular swimming spot down on the Mornington Peninsula yesterday, obviously spooking the beachgoers. Not quite an aggressive great white, but something to be wary of next time you're taking a dip.

  • Billie Eilish has used her recent tour of Aus to go on a bit of a sustainability mission, spreading the word about plant-based restaurants in the cities she has been visiting. She released a list of her top picks from Melbourne's vegan scene, featuring big names in the scene like Smith & Daughters and Red Sparrow Pizza—she's got taste. It is highly likely these picks were selected by her team, but some are worth a look nonetheless if you are looking to do your bit for the planet.

  • Revs has a questionable reputation for the go-to post-3 am venue, but their DJs and event schedule is not to be sniffed at—it was even the chosen venue of Fred Again's early morning surprise show this time last year. They have released their March events, including the legendary UK duo Groove Armada this Sunday. Their infamous cage is also seeing some other home-grown and international DJs gracing the decks, so take a look if you fancy a big night out.

Where to Eat and Drink

There’s no better place to mourn the end of summer than Fargo and Co in Richmond—especially now that their rooftop has had a glow-up. Already a popular spot thanks to their late-night happy hours ($9 spirits from 9 to 11 PM), bottomless bagel & bellini brunches, they took things up a notch with "Club Fargo" earlier this year—a pool party paradise. Think $39 spritz buckets and beaming sun—a fantastic way to start the long weekend.

Where to Live

A Frenchman, a voiceover artist, and a gym buff may sound like the start of a very terrible dad joke, but it's actually the three housemates you'd be living with at this St Kilda sublet. The room in this share house is available for four weeks from April, and it looks like a very cosy little spot. Complete with a courtyard and just round the corner from Acland Street, it's a great find.

Core selling point: The voiceover artist is also a comedian, and you thought the housemates couldn't get any better.

Where to Work

If you were interested in Billie Eilish's vegan recommendations, this might not be the job for you. About as non-vegan as you can get, Meatsmith Speciality Butcher & Wine Merchant is hiring for a Casual Packer to join their high-end butchers in St Kilda and Fitzroy. It doesn't specify what kind of packing you'd be doing, but you'd think it would probably involve handling a lot of raw meat. Not your run-of-the-mill butchers though—you might be able to get your hands on some of the tastiest steaks in town.

Where to Go

‘Festival' is almost becoming a buzzword at this point, but the Moomba Festival kicks off today ahead of the long weekend. This family-friendly free event takes place in Alexandra Gardens and across the river, featuring an interesting array of attractions including waterskiing, the birdman rally, rides, and plenty of international dance performances. The event is closed out every day for the rest of the week with an impressive firework display over the city from 9 pm, so grab a seat on the riverbanks to enjoy.
