Tuesday 11th February: XL Nando's, Open Mic & A Useless Cultural Exchange

It feels like every man and his koala has been to Tassie this summer, and if the fomo has pushed it to the top of your list, we've got another reason for you to book a flight. The Bay of Fires—all 10km of it—has just been crowned Australia’s best beach. Victoria just about scraped an entry into the top 10. Spoiler: it wasn't St Kilda. Have a read of what's going on a little more locally today, then get yourself on that Jetstar app.

The Headlines

  • Love a basque cheesecake with your Sunday morning coffee? Or perhaps you prefer a post-dinner chocolate slice? It appears Melbourne has a very strong cheesecake scene, so of course, there's a handy list rounding up the very best on offer. We've gushed about Lulu & Me before, which obviously tops the recommendations here, but there are plenty more spots worth checking out next time a sweet treat is calling.

  • Not to give Drake even more airtime, but his presence in Melbourne is really hitting the headlines at the moment. His absolutely huge Nando's order before his show has been revealed, and he spent a mammoth $2,651.75. This included 60 wraps, 15 whole chickens, and $150 on Perinaise—a man with great taste. He then went on to splash even more cash at the show, handing out $45,000 to fans in the crowd.

  • Aussie comedian Jenny Tian has recently made the move to London and has made some hilarious observations. Pointing out the crazy number of people that move from Melbourne to London and vice versa, she calls it 'the world’s most useless cultural exchange'. Claiming that Melbourne and London are 'basically the same city', we suggest she looks at the weather forecast, crime rates and rental prices—then gets back to us on that one.

Where to Eat and Drink

Caretaker’s Cottage on Little Lonsdale has the accolades to back up the hype—currently crowned Melbourne’s best bar by Time Out and sitting comfortably at 21st on the 2024 World’s 50 Best Bars list. Tucked away in a tiny old caretaker’s home, it’s about as close as you’ll get to a traditional (pint-sized) British pub in Melbourne. It’s the perfect place to sip away the last month of summer (don't) while enjoying their selection of craft cocktails.

Where to Live

This house is straight out of the ‘70s, but granny chic has never been more in vogue. These three girls in their twenties—and their cat—are looking for a new housemate to take a step back in time in their Kew pad. With two balconies, hidden doors, an IGA round the corner, and monthly rent of just $651, this sounds like the kind of time capsule we'd want to live in.

Core selling point: MAFS is always on the TV.

Where to Work

Vertical Gardens Australia are looking for a new Admin/Accounts Assistant to help balancing the books for their green-fingered business. Coming with a tasty hourly rate of $40-$45 per hour, this casual position requires some prior experience in admin, but if you know a couple of Excel formulas, you'll be just fine. With just two days per week in the South Yarra office, it leaves you plenty of time for basking in the sun with your laptop out from home.

Where to Go

For 144 years, Melbournians have been drinking, dining, and dancing at The Espy. These days, every Tuesday, amateur performers take to the stage for a weekly Open Mic night. Whether you're keen to watch with a pint in hand or ready to claim your five minutes of fame, it all kicks off from 7 pm. For the brave ones out there, apply online to make a feature on an upcoming setlist.
