Tuesday 11th March: French Toast, Rental Reform & More Rooftop Bars
The silence in St Kilda was deafening yesterday afternoon, with all the usual culprits swarming Fed Square instead. Here's what's going on today at the start of a lovely four-day week.
The Headlines
A big win for all of us renters, the Victorian government has introduced a whole host of reforms to increase the rights of tenants. Some of the best new policies include the banning of bidding wars, a ban on application fees, improved minimum property standards, and a ban on no-fault evictions. These revolutionary updates will hopefully make the scrappy process of finding a rental a lot more pleasant—although the bad news is they don't come in until November.
If there’s one thing Melbourne needed, it’s a new rooftop bar—so thankfully, Slowpoke has arrived. Perched atop Zero Gipps in Collingwood, this open-air spot delivers nearly 360-degree views, warm lighting, and custom furnishings, all crafted by three mates. The drinks menu mixes classics like a martini with bespoke picks like the Slowpoke Picante and with DJs already lined up and pop-up dining on the way, Slowpoke is on its way to being the place to be this autumn.
There's a book club gaining popularity in Melbourne, and it's probably not what you think. Coined the 'book club for introverts', people gather in Docklands on a Sunday and read together in complete silence. With many struggling to find the time to read, the Silent Book Club removes the distractions of the outside world to allow time to bury your head in the pages—very wholesome.
Where to Eat and Drink
South Melbourne Market continues to capture our hearts and today's pick is Chéri, a delightful European-inspired all-day eatery in the area. It has a menu boasting everything from freshly baked pastries to breakfast, pizza and gnocchi, all waiting to be washed down with a Bloody Mary or good old flat white. For the sweet breakfast lovers out there, order the heavenly French toast and never think about anything again. The gorgeous interior and sun-soaked courtyard stinks of a silly sunny afternoon.
Where to Live
If you've been dreaming of a Carlton winter filled with op shopping, cooking and the occasional board game, this house may be for you. Niche reference, but we think Miss Honey from Matilda would absolutely love to live here. Add a pottery wheel to the quaint kitchen and dining room and it would be complete.
Core selling point: vast selection of crockery on display.
Where to Work
Black Diamond Agency is looking for Casual Brand Ambassadors to work on a very random array of promotion jobs for brands like Tesla, Deliveroo, and Minor Figures. On the good days, you'll be handing out freebies on the beach or at the biggest sports events in Melbourne, and on the bad days, you'll be dressed up as the tooth fairy on a train station platform. But the positive is that you can pick and choose the jobs you want, so you can leave the humiliating costumes to some other unlucky backpacker.
Where to Go
Everyone's dad's favourite band, Kasabian, are gracing Forum in Melbourne tonight, supported by UK indie band Blossoms. The Melbourne leg of their Australian tour this week is sold out on Wednesday, but standing tickets are still available for tonight’s added date—turns out old school UK rock isn't the genre of choice for Aussies. For $130, it'll be a night of tunes you loved in your high school indie phase.
