Tuesday 12th November: National Happy Hour Day Special
Attention midweek offenders, it's National Happy Hour Day. A big day in the calendar, and something Melbourne does very well. Here is today's best bits, heavily featuring some bargain booze.
The Headlines
As it's National Happy Hour Day, it would be rude to not include some roundups of Melbourne's best mid-afternoon tipples. Broadsheet and Time Out have kindly found the finest deals, including beer, wine, cocktails and even some food offers thrown in there. Get yourself down to your nearest spot this afternoon, there's no better day for it.
We're only two points in, and this is shaping up to be a food and drink-heavy edition—we hope you're hungry. The next cuisine of choice is the good old burger, if you didn't make yourself bored by overeating them on the public BBQs up the coast, then here's a list of where you can find the best ones in Melbourne. Wave goodbye to Grill'd and head to Rockpool Bar and Grill for a boujee option or the likes of Chew for a textbook burger done well.
Here’s a bit of Melbourne history for you: rumour has it that Pellegrini's Espresso Bar is where the city's beloved coffee culture all began. This authentic Italian gem is celebrating its 70th birthday this week, so if you're yet to pay it a visit, now's the time. Regulars say it has remained unchanged since the '50s and still boasts the classic mirrored walls and chequerboard floor. Located right in the heart of the theatre district, treat yourself to an espresso and some Italian charm next time you're in town.
Where to Eat and Drink
A personal favourite happy hour of the 417 writers has to be Union House in Richmond. We're talking $4 pots, $8 pints, $8 wine and $12 Aperol Spritz—it's a hard one to beat. It's the closest thing to a British city pub we've found and like most Richmond watering holes, it's complete with a sun-filled rooftop and streetside tables for Swan St people-watching.
Where to Go
You guessed it, today's destination of choice had to be another happy hour. Naked For Satan is everyone's favourite rooftop bar, famous for it's gorgeous skyline views, good food and fun vibes. They are obviously way too cool to call it happy hour like everyone else, so they have gone for the very Fitzroy 'social hours', where you can get pints and vodka for $8 every day except Saturday from 4pm-7pm, alongside offers on sangria and negronis.
P.S. $4 pizza downstairs with any drink, Monday-Thursday.
Where to Live
Another day, another house with an adorable dog. Today’s pup in question lives in this Art Deco apartment, not many of them can say that. Close to the beaches, parks and bars St Kilda has to offer, the rent is pretty cheap too at just $240 a week. Sold as not a party house but one where your friends are more than welcome to visit, although we're not sure where they'd sit as the lounge is currently overridden with houseplants.
Core selling point: is that a lava lamp? Not seen one of those in about 15 years.
Where to Work
For an bit of extra pocket money over the summer months, this event bar staff role offers the perfect pick-when-you-work schedule, and you might even get to go to some cool events. With staff needed for music festivals and corporate functions, you'll either get to work some live music or get some big tipping business men, win-win. Who knows, you could even be shipped off to Pitch festival for free if you're lucky.
