Tuesday 14th January: Free Taxis, Fake Marriage & Pickleball
Scarborough Beach in England has this week comically been likened to an Australian beach. Whilst it's a lot better than most over there, we are sure even St Kilda's famously average shores are far more attractive this time of year—so take that. Enjoy your day gloating about the weather, and here is what Tuesday in Melbourne has to offer you.
The Headlines
If you forgot to cancel your Uber One subscription post-free trial, it's finally time to reap the rewards. Kia has teamed up with the taxi company to offer free lifts to and from the Australian Open. Fifty electric cars have been let loose on the city, waiting for people within 5km of Melbourne Park to choose the free ride option. It might actually be worth falling for the marketing ploy and becoming a member if you plan on making multiple visits over the next few weeks—no more sweaty trams for you.
PTV has been getting some heat recently for not only having some of the highest fares in the country but also the retro MyKi system not allowing contactless tapping in 2025. The latest drama with the tram system coincides with the ten-year anniversary of the free tram zone, which has been branded almost pointless as it reduces walking short distances and has not actually reduced car travel as intended. Proposed extensions are set to cost an extra $15 million a year, which seems hard to believe given most of their income must come from fines over fares as it is, IYKYK.
In crazy news, a woman living in Melbourne has just had to have her marriage annulled after the aspiring influencer she was dating coaxed her into a 'wedding prank' that he claimed was to boost his socials— but turned out to be not a prank at all. She went along with the prank in the moment, but when she received news that he had applied for PR in Australia based on their marriage, it turned out it was actually a real wedding. We've all thought about how to get PR, but that does seem extreme.
Where to Eat and Drink
Melbourne's long summer days are something to brag about, and Stavross Souvlaki on St Kilda Beach has you sorted for those sunny evenings strolls. It delivers sunset-watching goodness in the shape of high-quality yet cheap and cheerful souvlakis, beer, and wine. Conveniently located right next to St Kilda Sea Baths, it's ideal for a post-gym or swim treat—we won't tell anyone.
Where to Live
Here's your chance to live by the beach for summer and complete the working holiday maker Australian dream. There's a room available in this flat on the Benidorm strip—sorry we mean Acland St—from the end of the month. The current housemates are two mid-20s professionals who split their time between working and perfecting their interior design Pinterest boards. $190 a week gets you a spot minutes from the beach, trams, and enough cake shops to ruin any fitness goals.
Where to Work
Timberwolf is an Australia-wide tree-planting company looking for tree planters around Melbourne, with opportunities to travel to other states. The job description says they’re after money-hungry individuals who are looking to challenge their mind and body and refer to employees as their 'pack of wolves'—which does sound slightly like a cult, but also like a decent way to make money quickly. With picking your own hours and a chance to see more of Aus, maybe it's a cult worth joining.
Where to Go
A pickleball court has popped up on the rooftop of QT Melbourne—makes a change from an outdoor cinema. Tennis stars Naomi Osaka, Nick Kyrgios, and Frances Tiafoe were at the launch, so if it's fit for them, it's fit for you. You can just have a casual knock with a pint, or, if you back your skills, enter yourself into the competition running Thursday to Sunday nights for a chance to win big (a round of Red Bull cocktails). It's running until March 3rd, because it is racquet sport season after all.
Match Point Pick
The British women are in action today, with Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter kicking off their tournament. But our spicy match of the day pick actually lies with Katie's fiancé. Aussie number 1 Alex De Minaur has been handed a tough draw and will face Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp on Rod Laver this evening. This is the guy who gave Alcaraz the shock of his life in the second round of the US Open last year—worth finding a big screen in the pub or the park we'd say.
