Tuesday 15th April: British Chocolate, No-Nonsense Burgers & Professional Galloping

Yayoi Kusama's dotty display is now officially the most attended ticketed exhibition in Australian history. The news comes as no surprise after seeing everybody and their mum post it on Instagram since it opened. You've got until next week to catch it if you're one of the few who hasn't yet. Here's what else is going on across the city today.

The Headlines

  • Rumour has it Kmart is selling Easter eggs imported from the UK. Excited working holiday makers have flooded TikTok to share the breaking news that we can finally get some proper-tasting choccy. At $5 each, it's worth stocking up to keep you going for a few months—or at least until the next package from home arrives. Move quick before someone else clears the shelves.

  • It's a bad day to be allergic to pollen—a new study has revealed that Melbourne's hay fever season is going on longer than ever. No longer confined to spring, it's now starting earlier and finishing later. Reports have suggested hay fever sufferers are particularly triggered in the CBD, and experts have simply no explanation for it. Guess all you can do is keep popping those antihistamines.

  • Melbourne is getting a brand new theatre experience in May—in a first for Australia, a virtual reality immersive performance will debut at the Sleepless Footscray Festival. Audiences will experience a trippy narrative through VR, interactive AI and other tech, mixed with some live performance. The story covers the taboo topic of living with mental illness, aiming to de-stigmatise through the performance. Who needs the West End when you've got Footscray?

Where to Eat and Drink

Benny’s American Burger on Chapel is a low-cost, high-calorie, no-nonsense burger joint. There’s nothing not to love—it’s basic in the best way. The burgers are messy and the beers are cheap. Drop in between 3 pm and midnight any day for happy hour, with $5 pots and $7 pints of Carlton or Furphy. Pair your drink with a classic cheeseburger and some tasty tater tots. They even do proper chips and gravy too—although we can't promise it'll be as good as back home.

Where to Live

This is a girl flat if we've ever seen one: St Moritz coffee table book, neon hearts and absolutely no grey bedsheets in sight. Your housemate would be a Kiwi turned Melbourne lover—might be some free NZ accom for you down the line if you don't leave your dirty dishes on the side. Rental history and current job are necessary, so not one for you if you're in the pits of the job and house hunt, sadly.

Core selling point: adorable little sunroom.

Where to Work

This one could be a niche one, but it's not often a job actively encourages Working Holiday Visa holders to apply. Kavanagh Racing is looking for someone with a bit of horseback experience to be their new Track Rider, in a role that we can only presume involves simply riding horses round Flemington Racecourse. With the only requirement being “able to ride gallops” (which hopefully makes sense to any seasoned riders), and “excellent renumeration” on offer, sounds like a no-brainer for budding equestrians.

Where to Go

You might recognise Flo & Joan from their viral Facebook vids back when TikTok was just a twinkle in our eyes. Now, they’ve penned One Man Musical—a satirical stage show starring George Fouracres that’s currently making its Australian debut at Melbourne's Arts Centre. Think West End parody meets good old British sarcasm, fun. It's on until next week, with tickets at $34 tonight for Tightarse Tuesdays.
