Tuesday 17th December: Christmas Sun, Yo-chi Rival & Teeny-Tiny Box Room

We all know it'll have changed again by tomorrow, but the weather forecast for Christmas Day has officially landed. It's set to be a stunning 26°C with no rain in sight. We'll believe it when we see it, but for now, keep the beach plans going. Until then, here's how you can spend your Tuesday.

The Headlines

  • In the latest fun food collab, Earth Angels is teaming up with Masses Bagels for one evening only this Saturday 21st. The former is a humble wine bar hailed as one of the best new openings of the year by Broadsheet, with the latter bringing a sprinkle of fermentation—a sweet, sweet combo. You can expect prickly pear and whipped snapper cod roe, crumbed lamb brain mapo, bonito with cold cucumber and buttermilk, and Guinness and ginger cake with wild-fermented bagel ice cream, with more dishes yet to be revealed. Booking is advised, but there will be some walk-in space on the night if you're feeling spontaneous.

  • We hate to say it, but Melbourne could be at risk of having one too many outdoor cinemas. The latest addition will grace Moonee Ponds from tomorrow until March and is channelling its inner CBD rooftop bar. The Palace Penny Lane schedule boasts recent box office hits alongside some classics you'd expect to see. Rumour has it Robbie Williams' Better Man, some of which was filmed right here in Melbourne, will be shown in January—perfect for a collective game of "say ooh if you've been there."

  • If you're missing having Europe on your doorstep—one of the best things about the UK, let's be honest—check out this list of the very best French restaurants right here in Melbourne. All 14 bistros look delightful and promise good wine, delicious food, sexy vibes, and a snail or two if you're lucky. Most of them sit on the pricier side, but they can’t be worse than Paris itself. Bon appétit.

Where to Eat and Drink

Tyranny of Distance is a hidden gem located down Windsor's Union Street. Once a petrol station, it has since been transformed into a chilled outdoor café-bar perfect for an afternoon drink. It’s very, very Melbourne, with an Instagram feed fresh off the digicam. Most importantly, its happy hour is one of the best we've found, with a bargain $5 house taps, wines, and spirits every day from 4–7 pm—and even later on Fridays.

Where to Live

This teeny-tiny room in Collingwood will set you back just $650 per month!!! If you always found yourself drawing the box room short straw at uni then this won't even phase you and you’ll be saving yourself an absolute fortune. The ad says there's currently a single bunk bed in there but sadly, there's no photo evidence so you'll have to commit to a visit to see what you're really in for. The rest of the house looks welcoming though with a comfy-looking sofa you can chill on when you get a bit claustrophobic in your bedroom.

Core selling point: one of those teeny tiny funky-shaped candle in the bathroom trying to mask the dated decor.

Where to Work

We've all watched Yo-chi's rise unfold right in front of our eyes, and rightly so. But in case you missed it, there's a spot in Cremorne opening up to give it a run for its money. Yokli is looking for staff with the unofficial responsibilities of making sure no kids are sticking their fingers in the hot chocolate sauce and playing guess the price as customers approach the scales. Working in a fro-yo bar during Aussie summer—doesn't get more WHV than that really does it?

Where to Go

Fun fact: Revs has been hosting its Tuesday trivia night for the last 15 years. Remember that—you never know when you might need it in a pub quiz one day. Tonight's event is getting a Christmas makeover, and there's still space for you to get a slice of the fun. 'Merry Quizmas' (wonder how they came up with that one) starts at 7 pm in the cage. To register your team, drop Joey Lightbulb a DM Instagram—that surely wasn’t the sign-up method in 2009.
