Tuesday 18th February: Podcast Recs, Reformer Pilates & Curry Mile Competitors
It's Global Drink Wine Day so obviously we're sharing this list again of all the delightful wine bars in Melbourne. Gracies, the latest vino on the block, will open on Tuesdays from this week too—look at that for timing. Here's everything else going on today—enjoy reading while you sip.
The Headlines
London radio giants NTS have announced a massive day party this weekend, and it's already on final release. They are taking over Northcote Theatre all day on Saturday for their biggest Aussie event to date, and it sounds like the place to be. They’ve lined up the best groovy electronic DJs from 5pm to 3am. Tickets will set you back almost $100—but rumour has it, it'll be worth it.
Despite Glasgow claiming the invention of the tikka masala, Melbourne more than holds its own when it comes to Indian cuisine. From classic curry houses to contemporary takes on regional specialties, the city has plenty of spots that could rival even Manchester's famed Curry Mile. Whether you play it safe with a butter chicken or are partial to a spicy vindaloo, this list rounds up the best Indian restaurants Melbourne has to offer.
There’s no better way to immerse yourself in Aussie culture than by having the dulcet tones in your ears every morning. Podcasts are everywhere—every micro-influencer and their mum seems to be launching one—but some of them are actually worth your time. Here’s a handy list of the very best Australian podcasts to add to your listen list, whether you're on a long tram ride or tackling the kitchen clean. Special mention to our favourites at Shameless Media, who’ve made the list not once but three times.
Where to Eat and Drink
Piccolo Panini Bar in Hawthorn has generated quite the buzz, and despite the $16 price tag, these sandwiches deliver. The Italian-style panini is the perfect mix of traditional and creative—from well-executed classics like our fave, the caprese and prosciutto, to their famous meatball filling and the best specials. True to their playful motto, "no panini, no party," this laid-back spot is ideal for enjoying a little morning coffee and fresh focaccia.
Where to Live
This lovely little one-bed flat in the centre of St Kilda is available for a lease transfer from mid-March. It's got a little courtyard, a stylish bathroom, and a brown leather sofa that, admittedly, might not be to everyones taste. Plus, it's fully furnished with everything you need, so no need to trawl Facebook Marketplace. The lease ends at the start of October if you're planning to move on from Melbourne—not that you'd want to.
Cose selling point: Comes with a selection of abstract artwork to call your own.
Where to Work
Goodbye torturous hospo job, hello Meetings and Events Assistant at United Co. The perfect way to escape your bar shifts, this role at a very fancy corporate co-working space in Fitzroy involves setting up meeting rooms, making a few coffees, and picking up the lunchtime catering for the suits. No more late nights—this role lets you slip into the 9-5 lifestyle without staring at a laptop all day. They obviously have an on-site gym and wellness spaces, and obviously you get full access to use them—what a perk.
Where to Go
Reformer Pilates continues to steal the hearts of Lululemon lovers and we're spoiled for choice with gorgeous studios. Upstate is one of the standouts, with locations across the city, including Fitzroy, Balaclava, and South Yarra. They offer a welcome deal that’s hard to beat—$59 for unlimited classes in your first month. With single sessions usually costing $27, it’s an easy yes for anyone looking for some motivation to get up off the sofa (or sun lounger). They offer box and mat pilates classes too if you’re too scared of falling off the reformer bed.
