Tuesday 21st January: Beach Volleyball, Space Raiders & Wacky Cold Brew

We are blessed down here in Victoria to not have to deal with as many snakes and spiders as other parts of the country, but a few can slip through the net. There has been a snake sighting in Richmond near the Yarra, so stay safe out there. Here’s what to do with your Tuesday—when not on snake watch, of course.

The Headlines

  • Another reason we are so blessed down here is that recent data shows rental prices in Melbourne are plateauing compared to the rest of Australia. While Perth and Adelaide are still seeing sharp increases and a smaller proportion of affordable rentals, Melbourne takes the crown once again. Not that it means it's cheap by any stretch, but compared to places like London, we'll take Melbourne any day of the week.

  • Ordering your bog-standard skinny cap can get boring, so here’s where to find the most unique and viral drinks in Melbourne. Tiramisu seems to be the flavour of the moment, with the list featuring matchas and lattes inspired by the dessert. From wacky cold brews to salty coffee, there are plenty of tried-and-tested, boundary pushing drinks to sample around the city. Good Measure in Carlton, of course, features on the list for their massively popular Mont Blanc drink—a must try.

  • We're sure you're not alone if the first thing you'll eat when you get back home is a good old Chinese takeaway—it just doesn't quite hit the same out here. But, if you don't have any return plans or need your fix sooner, this list of the top 25 Chinese restaurants in Melbourne could help. It is, unfortunately, giving a more leave the house in a nice outfit vibe rather than a sit on the sofa in your joggers one, but there are some tasty looking spots on there nonetheless.

Where to Eat and Drink

Todays pick is a little bit different, and it’s another one for anyone who is missing their home comforts. We all know that Aussie Cadbury has that strange taste and don't even get us started on the poor selection of crisps. Well, we’ve found just the place to crush those cravings. Hotham Street Milkbar in St Kilda East stocks it all. We’re talking Quavers, Monster Munch, Space Raiders, Galaxy Chocolate, Pot Noodles, Bisto gravy and heaps more. Run, don't walk!

Where to Live

This house is absolutely stunning, and we can't help but think the resident furniture business owner might have something to do with it. The natural light, Bali-esque bathroom, and garden fit for a family home are an absolute dream, and we just hope it's as good in real life as it is in the pics. If you're looking to enter the wholesome phase of your life, this could be your time—mindfulness and yoga-loving flatmates, with Prahran Market on your doorstep for all the local food goodness.

Core selling point: maybe the first time we'd ever consider using the bath in a share house.

Where to Work

AFL hiring season is in full swing, and this time, the fans of Carlton need feeding—and they're demanding toasties. Getting paid to make your usual hangover snack, it can't get easier than that. Your official title would be Sandwich & Kitchen Hand (less fun), and the perks of the job include staff discount and the chance to spot Aussie athletes you couldn't name if your life depended on it—fun flex to those back home though.

Where to Go

The beloved Republica in St Kilda puts on social beach volleyball competitions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays each week in summer—and you even get a pizza and beer thrown in for taking part. This very Aussie event welcomes beginners, and you can head down in a team or by yourself for a bit of socialising. Gather your mates and sign yourselves up for a night of throwing yourself in the sand—sounds like a new hobby pending.

Match Point Pick

Even for the non-tennis fans reading this, today's highlight picks itself. Novak Djokovic is on the hunt for his 25th Grand Slam, and his next obstacle comes in the form of Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz. You'd be correct for wondering why this isn't a battle for the title, but the Serb's current lower ranking leaves them fighting for a place in the semis. Whoever is victorious will be a sure favourite to lift the trophy. You can get a grounds pass for just $19 to watch it on the big screens in Melbourne Park if you want in on the atmosphere of the Olympic gold medal rematch.
