Tuesday 26th November: Banksy, dating shows & hoards of flies

In true European gap year style, it seems Jürgen Klopp is doing an Aussie tour. He was in the Northern Territory last week and was spotted in Brisbane yesterday which surely means he'll be in Melbourne any day now. Liverpool fans watch out. Here's how you can spend your Tuesday in the meantime, with your eyes peeled, of course.

The Headlines

  • It's virtually impossible to step outside your front door at the moment without constantly wafting around your face and having a large fly family nest in your hair. The hordes of flies are the talk of the town at the moment, and now we finally have a potential reason, and it's not a good one. Experts are citing climate change as the reason for the sudden influx, with a 'mild winter' meaning more eggs than normal made it through the colder months. Conclusion is, they aren't going anywhere, so we may have to start roaming the streets with a fly zapper.

  • Whatever Yo! Sushi can do, Melbourne can do better. No, we're not talking about garish orange branding; instead, the novel sushi train. Melbourne has a huge range of offerings, from fancy restaurants like Windsor's Ganbare Kaz to more budget-friendly lunch spots like Yoyogi and Tetsujin in the CBD. Here's a list of the very best moving maki in the city, perfect for when you're bored of a bog-standard menu.

  • Melbourne’s already world-renowned street-art collection is about to get a new addition, with a new exhibition landing in the CBD on 12th December. The collection will be completely free, and feature a never-before-seen piece from the elusive Bristol-based artist Banksy, amongst other big names in the spray-paint street art world. Running until mid next year, it’s your chance to get some culture while saving the pennies.

Where to Eat and Drink

Zita's Focaccia in South Yarra is the coolest, cosiest lunch spot around. Their eye-catching yellow exterior brightens up Toorak Road, and they serve up authentic focaccia sandwiches stuffed with delicious fillings and made hot and fresh to order. Their speciality is something not often seen in Melbourne's sea of focaccia, the Genovese style means its lighter and crispier, and fillings include Italian fan faves such as stracciatella, mortadella, prosciutto, and pistachio. Grab a street-side sanga next time you're in the area.

Where to Live

These two Kiwi girls are looking for someone to replace their departing British housemate. The lounge decor is stunning, but the photos do look like they were taken pre-inhabitants, so get yourself down for a viewing if you're precious about your bouclé chairs. The huge garden, fit for a family house, is perfect for summer gatherings and sunbathing days, and we're sure you can find a sun bed or two down the Aldi middle aisle to kit it out a little.

Core selling point: sunny room with big windows.

Where to Work

We're all well aware by now that wine bars are something Melbourne (and Australia, generally) does particularly well. If you're keen to get involved in the Aussie vino scene, Essie in Malvern is hiring casuals and a new assistant manager. It's a gorgeous little spot, perfect for wine enthusiasts—or desperate working holidaymakers. There are definitely worse places to spend your Saturday nights, even if you are on the wrong side of the bar.

Where to Go

If Hinge isn't providing, Human Love Quest is here to the rescue. This event, held at the Brunswick Ballroom, is a live onstage dating show featuring an eligible single with three potential dates to pick from. Rumour has it audience members can also confess their crowd crush to the hosts, also making it some kind of involuntary dating mixer. Whether you want to apply to be the star of the show or simply go along for a laugh, it's an entertaining Tuesday night. Read about a journalist’s experience attending here if you're still unsure.
