Monday 2nd December: turkey croissants, deadly city snakes & the best of Brunswick

It's Cyber Monday, so there is one more day to catch some bargains whilst procrastinating at work today if you've not drained your bank account over the weekend. Here is what else Monday in Melbourne has to offer.

The Headlines

  • We really believed them when they told us the creatures wouldn't catch us here in Melbourne. Well, in absolutely terrifying news, a deadly tiger snake found its way into this woman's car and slithered up her leg while she was driving on the Monash Freeway. She somehow managed to stay calm and pull over, before calling the police and a snake catcher—could simply never be us. Moral of the story: check your steering wheels before you drive and stay safe out there.

  • Brunswick is famous for its op-shops and being the art and culture hub of the city, but it does also have a reputation (as with most suburbs) for a decent selection of pubs and bars. Beat has created this handy round-up of the best venues with one for every occasion. From local faves to the new kids on the block, check out where to get the tastiest cocktails and the best pub grub in the area.

  • The famous Lune Croissanterie has announced their Christmas creations for December and they are looking special, Greggs festive menu eat your heart out. Highlights include a stuffed turkey croissant, a Christmas-pudding inspired pastry and an eggnog cruffin. In the absence of freezing temperatures and the usual winter home comforts, festive pastry is surely the next best thing to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Where to Eat and Drink

If you're looking to start the new week off on a good foot, Seedling Café is a healthy lunch spot in the CBD. Inspired by the paleo diet, everything is 100% gluten-free, nutritious, wholesome and perfect for workers (or shoppers) who are busy and on the go. We recommend going for the ‘get your green’ smoothie bowl, or if you’re extra hungry treat yourself to the waffles and make everyone in the office jealous of the goodness.

Where to Live

Come for the prime Fitzroy location, stay for the balcony hot tub. This fully furnished room has everything you need to see you through summer—a sun-filled outdoor space and Fitzroy baths at the end of the road. It's a shame about the black leather sofas, but you'll be spending all your time out on the patio anyway. Couples are welcome if you're struggling on that front, too.

Core selling point: a water cooler/mini fountain.

Where to Work

For those who know their way around a currency converter app, know their times tables and enjoy nothing more than hopping on a plane, this job sounds like a dream. Travel Money Oz is looking for a casual Foreign Exchange Consultant to advise on foreign currency and travel to different destinations. They offer 'familiarisation trips' to overseas destinations and a company trip to LA next year, sounds absolutely worth faking your passion for maths just for the free trips.

Where to Go

This is your one-week warning to catch THE LUME's Da Vinci immersive experience which is finishing up this Sunday. It's your last chance to see the Mona Lisa in lights, nosy at some of his original sketchbook pages and interact with 50 "machine inventions". If you fancy injecting some culture into your week, tickets start at $29.90 for students and $49 for adults, with later opening times Friday and Saturday for the full-timers among us.
