Tuesday 7th January: Outdoor Theatre, Bear Grylls & Bang for your Buck

In slightly dull but also slightly important news, the Australian Dollar has hit a five year low, so by our calculations that means you'll get more bang for your buck using your overseas account at the moment. So dip into those savings and enjoy your Tuesday in Melbourne.

The Headlines

  • Broadsheet loves a coffee roundup (don't we all) and its latest shines a light on the seven newest spots in the city. From a Tokyo-inspired cafe in North Melbourne to Indonesian cold brews topped with pandan coconut cream or peach-infused beans over at Project Zero Coffee, Melbourne's coffee scene is levelling up yet again. Whether you're after a flat white or something a bit more exotic, here are all the latest places to add to your list.

  • In a welcome twist to the many outdoor cinemas that have popped up in recent weeks, the Planetarium will feature a bunch of films projected across its 16-metre domed ceiling. It's all part of the Dome Under Film Festival, which will take place later this month. The marvel has been dubbed a "VR-like journey into experimental filmmaking" if that's the kind of thing that tickles your fancy. Get it in your diaries if you simply can't face another romcom in the park.

  • You might argue that a new croissant menu isn't news, but Lune is the exception. Their monthly new menus have been covered in the Melbourne 417 before, but this January, they've released a Hall of Fame: Class of 2024 menu that just has to be talked about. Lune is bringing back the six most raved-about specials from last year for this month, including the 'everything croissant' and 'yuzu cheesecake', to name a few.

Where to Eat and Drink

College Lawn Hotel in Prahan, from our in-depth research, is about as close to a fun London pub as you’ll find in the Southern Hemisphere. This popular joint always has a good atmosphere in its pub garden, and they do a decent happy hour from 4pm-6pm Monday-Friday. The Australian Open will be shown on the big screens there from next week, ideal for a cheap pint and watching some yellow balls be hit. P.S. They are on The Pass, IYKYK.

Where to Live

An en-suite room is available in this Moonee Ponds flat and it could be all yours for at least the next six months. It's unclear in the photos which of the sofas are currently in the flat, but we know which we'd prefer (clue: not the black leather one). The outdoor entertaining area looks straight out of a boujee hotel, the perfect place to show off to your city friends.

Core selling point: the stunning Bali-esque yoga studio.

Where to Work

Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre are looking for a new Cafe & Kiosk Attendant for their iconic venue on the Southbank. With the venue hosting events from an evening with Bear Grylls, to Indiana Jones live in concert, to the Australian Pickleball Open, there is no other job where you would meet such a random cross section of society whilst making coffees. Requirements include being physically fit due to the high size of the centre, so this job could also double up as part of your January fitness schedule.

Where to Go

The Merry Wives of Windsor are bringing some drama to the Botanic Gardens over summer with an outdoor theatre treat. The show takes place under the stars and boasts a blend of humour and charm. We're obsessed with the promo video of Aussies giving their 10 cents on the humour, the show seems to be going down a treat with the oldies. Tickets will set you back $60 which includes a humble patch of grass as your seat for the night.
