Tuesday 8th April: Bakery Matrix, Lucky Bags & Cheap Laughs

Time Out has done the Hot Cross Bun research so we don't have to. We never had any doubt the bakeries of Melbourne would provide some top-notch buns, so here is the matrix to help you pick which to try. Here’s what's happening today in Melbourne—and why not treat yourself to a trusty HCB.

The Headlines

  • Already popular for its sports bars and secret rooftops, Richmond has a new offering—and it's a teeny tiny pub out to prove that size isn't everything. Nixie Nox, with space for just 80 patrons across three areas, offers a cosy spot for elevated pub grub and a solid drinks list. Whether you're after a quiet pint or a hearty meal, Nixie Nox brings a touch of vintage charm to Swan Street and is maybe as close to a fancy London pub as we’ll get for a while.

  • Nobody works harder than the Frank Green marketing team, and after their recent big Chadstone launch, they're back with their next big thing. From today, you can buy a lucky bag with a random assortment of products at the Chadstone and Melbourne central stores, all week until they're sold out. Each purchase will enter you into a draw to win a Fiat 500 (so Frank Green coded), and if you share it on your socials, you're in with a chance to win $1,000.

  • Lune Croissanterie has just launched a loyalty program, giving you even more reason to indulge in their world-famous almond croissants (or other pastry of choice). With the new Lune Passport, you'll earn one 'zont mile' for every dollar spent on food at any of their locations. Accumulate 200 points and enjoy $10 off your next purchase. You'll also get access to other exclusive perks like double points and birthday presents. Sign up online or scan the QR code in-store to get started.

Where to Eat and Drink

End your Tuesday with a bang at Bang Bang in Elsternwick with their curry deal. For $17 (down from $24), you can choose from three tasty curries with bold pan-Asian flavours. This local favourite is known for its laid-back courtyard, making it the perfect spot for after-work drinks. No Melbourne eatery is complete without a happy hour deal—their daily drinks deals from 4 pm to 6 pm feature $6 beer and wine, plus $8 spritzes.

Where to Live

It would be hard living in this townhouse and not feeling like you had your life together. That coffee table and sofa combo would never be seen dead in a student flat—those days would be truly behind you if you secured the spot. It'll set you back $308 a week and you'll need to furnish the bedroom yourself, but everything else is good to go, including the home gym.

Core selling point: proximity to the Merri Creek.

Where to Work

If you're saving for flights to escape the Melbourne winter and looking to earn a bit of extra pocket money, spending a weekend doing some event work is not the worst idea. This book company is hiring a casual to do four shifts over a weekend in June at an exhibition in the CBD—and they'll even pay for your lunch. The company specialises in tarot and spiritual literature, so be warned, you might have to spout a bit about wellness and affirmations to the punters.

Where to Go

You'll know by now—if you've been paying attention—that the Comedy Festival has taken over Melbourne's pubs and small theatres. If you're yet to catch a show, Tightarse Tuesday might be the push you need. Most of the shows are offering some kind of ticket discount tonight—just look for the green dot on the schedule and bag yourself a deal. Cheap laughs all round.
