Wednesday 15th January: Pilates, Desserts & Shark Avoiding
The idea of a 'magic' appears to be going over baristas’ heads up in Sydney—they just wouldn't understand. Whether you've never tried one, or it's already your go-to coffee, take this as your sign to go and treat yourself to one this morning. Have a read what's going on in the city while you sip on your double ristretto topped with steamed milk.
The Headlines
Anyone who is a regular down Chapel Street will have seen the mysterious large empty space that is the Jam Factory. Plans have just been released for the redevelopment of the precinct into some lovely new flats, retail, and dining space. Demolition has begun in the space, ready for the mammoth project to get underway. One to get excited about if you're sticking around in Melbourne long-term, as no doubt this gorgeous new area is a good few years away.
Cast your minds back to the city-wide frenzy back in September when nobody had any idea where the best place to watch the AFL Grand Final was, well here is a list of the best sport-friendly bars in Melbourne to stop that happening next time. There are places to watch rugby, football, boxing, basketball, and of course, AFL, if you really want to get into the Aussie spirit. PSA for any Liverpool fans out there—word on the street is that the Imperial Hotel is the place to watch the midnight games with other fans.
We're two weeks into January, so you've either gymmed every day or are yet to make it there—there's no in-between. Well, rather than scheduling in an unachievable 10k, why not ease yourself in with a pilates class? Here's a handy list of the very best studios Melbourne has to offer, obviously they're all stunning. Loads of them have good newbies deals on too, just to wipe another one of your excuses.
Where to Eat and Drink
We all love a sweet treat, and luckily, Melbourne is not short of options. Miilk Cake Studio on Swanston Street is one of the CBD's many cool late-night dessert bars. Open till 10 pm most evenings, it serves up a range of both traditional and modern-inspired recipes passed down through generations of the owner's Singaporean family heritage. Treat yourself to their signature milk drinks while you're there too—delicious.
Where to Live
If proximity to The Crown and DFO is top of your flat-hunting wish list, we've got the apartment for you. It's down at Southbank, will set you back $284 a week, and comes complete with stunning wrap-around views of the city and all the usual amenities. South Melbourne Market is a short stroll away too—the perfect place to spend your weekends (unless you're more of the roulette type).
Core selling point: very topical, but there's a tennis court in the complex.
Where to Work
Dream job alert today, very cool Melbourne chocolatiers Hunted+Gathered based in Cremorne are looking for a new junior member of their production team. Making all their chocolate from bean to bar in-house, you'd be in their kitchens tempering up a storm helping to make their range of unique chocolate and learning the process. Kitchen experience is preferred but not essential. As long as you can show your passion for chocolate, you're in with a shot.
Where to Go
Everyone had dreams of becoming a salty-haired, hippy surfer when moving to Australia, and it’s clear Melbourne is not the place to live out that fantasy. But if you’re still looking to catch some waves down here, Urbn Surf is the place to learn. It’s an artificial wave centre near the airport offering lessons for all abilities, and they can adjust the wave height based on ability. It’s the best way to learn, with absolutely no need to worry about sharks and jellyfish. If you’re already at one with the waves, you can also just go along for a surf without a lesson. Who needs Bondi beach?
Match Point Pick
Round one is complete and half of this years competitors have been sent packing a whole $132,000 richer. It's not every day you get to see a four-time Grand Slam champion on an outside court but today is one of those days. Naomi Osaka takes on Karolína Muchová in the 2nd match on Kia Arena today. With both on a mission to rise back to the top of the rankings, it's set to be a fascinating clash.
