Wednesday 19th February: Local Rainforest, Yarra Homes & Private School Gossip

If by some miracle you were in the market to buy a house in Aus, that dream will have to be put on hold. The government has just banned houses being sold to foreigners until 2027 to tackle the housing crisis. Here is the latest from Melbourne today, and no more house browsing, unfortunately.

The Headlines

  • Just as Drake has left Melbourne, we welcome Billie Eilish to the city as the newest celebrity to spot. She touched down ahead of her sold out Aussie tour, and in true Billie Eilish fashion she was wearing jorts and a Carhartt jacket, complete with a cap, sunnies and a face mask—so celebrity coded. She's clearly getting into the Melbourne spirit already, she'd fit right in wandering Gertrude Street in that outfit.

  • Aussie airlines are giving out cheap flights as often as DFS releases bargain sofas, it seems, but we're not complaining. The latest offering is being dubbed Click Frenzy and is packed with reduced flights from Melbourne to various destinations around the world. The UK and Europe feature heavily on the list, with up to 15% off some trips—so if you're after a slice of home but have yet to book, now could be the time.

  • Time Out has featured one of the lesser-known gems of Victoria, the Tarra-Bulga National Park which is around a 2-hour drive from Melbourne, and it looks worth every second. This eucalypt forest is one of the last remaining in the state, and it makes a lovely looking rainforest. There are hiking trails and stunning views, and it wouldn't be Australia without a selection of local wildlife around to spot—you could finally tick seeing platypus, wombats and wallabies off the list.

Where to Eat and Drink

Pining for paella? 520 Macaulay Road in Kensington offers a tapas-style menu with classic small plates and some creative cuisine fusions. Mix it up and pair your Spanish meatballs with some spicy chicken dumplings for a fun combo. The space is relaxed, with plants and wooden tables adding to the inviting and cosy vibe. Wednesdays and Thursdays are the days to visit with chicken, seafood, veggie or chorizo paella at just $15 and sangria at $8—it’s a fiesta you won’t want to miss.

Where to Live

For your chance to live as close to literally on the Yarra as you'll get, there's a two bed apartment up for grabs in Collingwood within touching distance of the water. The complex has a pool and gym that overlook, you guessed it, the river, and loads of other gorgeous amenities. It's also a short walk from Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre meaning IKEA, Kmart and padel on demand—endless fun.

Core selling point: we can confirm the nicest landlord in Melbourne.

Where to Work

This all-girls Catholic private school is looking for a Personal Assistant / Receptionist to join them on a casual, ad-hoc basis. Sacre Coeur in Glen Iris charges a whopping $30,000 in annual school fees, and luckily that is reflected in the hourly pay for this job, coming in at $50-55 per hour, a casual rate you don't see all that often. 'Handling sensitive information' is in the job description, so it sounds like there would be a lot of juicy gossip floating around too.

Where to Go

If your camera roll is 90% blurry beach shots, prepare to be humbled. The Ocean Photographer of the Year exhibition has landed in Melbourne, showcasing some of the best underwater and coastal photography from around the world. Running at Seaworks in Williamstown until July, we we can safely assume none of these shots were taken through one of those $2 waterproof phone cases.
